Some people don't like being told what to do. They don't mind other people being told not to steal or commit adultery, but don't try to make the law apply to them...

Most of those who are opposed to "following the Bible" aren't really opposed to those good teachings your mentioned. They are opposed to organized religion because they can't bear the thought that someone else might judge them or tell them what to do. And that stems ultimately from arrogance. Arrogance that one has all the answers and that one cannot be wrong. Both sides have it, but the atheists have it worse because they reject even the notion of a God who might know more than they do. Theirs is the ultimate arrogance. The God-believers are willing to humble themselves to the point of admitting that they may not have all the answers, and they need God. That to me makes a lot more sense than pretending that we DO have all the answers when we clearly do not.

It also says that if a married man dies his brother is to marry the widowed wife. The things you mentioned are obviously the good comon sense parts but the parts that are complete bs and the parts that are used as weapons to hide bigotry are much more prevalent.

You sound street smart but self lack of knowledge on planet earth.
Have you found and answer a piece of question with " Three little words" on " Who are you" left behind by our creator for each and every living human kind to come up with an answer on planet earth?
Your ticket pass in finding your way home to our creator on planet earth.
Without the ticket pass you will be just one who came and passing by serving no good purpose for the good of mankind on planet earth.
So don't go around kicking the butts of your brothers and sisters out there on planet earth.

It sounds like you read a different bible than I did. The bible I read was full of restrictions, such as not wearing clothes with mixed fibers. The proper way to treat your slaves. Medical guidelines such as soaking your big toe in blood from a pidgeon or dove to treat leprosy. Instructions to kill your children if they misbehave. Instuctions to burn witches, kill homosexuals etc. Even the new testament is full of threats of eternal torture and instructions to hate your family.
Maybe you only read the parts your minister told you to.

The things you mention are mostly common sense morality found in all the religions of the world and in the minds of rational adults who have no belief in any religion. Obviously, as you must be aware, intelligent people who reject the bible reject it for what they consider the nonsense in it.

There is nothing wrong with these values. Many of these values are not new or unique to Christianity. It is when these values are interpreted by one group, then forced upon another group, that they loose their worth.

This country's founding fathers believed in the moral teachings of the Bible, but not in the miracles.

I believe in living my life as a good person. I don't need a reward or penance over my head to encourage me to do it, this is where religion and I conflict.

God says he loves you, but will kill you and commit you to hell if he feels like it. Nice. Keep reading. By the way, nothing can be 110%. Impossible, even for your god.
