Hi,
I found a datson/spanial mix. She is precious. She was outside along a road w/ other big dogs. She had fleas, ticks, etc. We took her in, cleaned her up etc. We love her! We can't potty break her though. I have other dogs inside that go out use the bathroom, do great. This one, she goes outside wants to play w/ the dogs outside , then comes in and usese the bathroom. What can I do? She will even poop/pi on book bags etc. She gets the urge and their she goes. No hints either. You just see it/ smell etc. Help! I have 8 dogs. I've not ever had this kind of trouble potty training.
Thanks!
Patti & Gidget ( the dog) :)

ok firstly you took in a dog that didnt belong to you.. did you report to the SPCA finding the dog?? it could have an owner that has been looking for it.... keeping a dog without reporting finding it could have you charged with theft so make sure you do that ASAP

dashund (I think this is what you are trying to say....)

crate train crate train crate train.... you MUST go outside with the dog and be armed with a soft treat and offer it as an IMMEDIATE reward .. alot of people get lazy about going out with the dog.. so the dog never gets an immediate reward... waiting till the dog comes in, it will associate the reward with coming in, not pooping outside....

better food will mean less poops
have vet check for medical reasons if ifs peeing inside

crate train and keep on leash when indoors because she will start to sniff or circle when she is getting ready to go potty and you need to be able to get her out asap

Try the umbilical method. Get a 4 ft leash that you can attach around your waist. Make her follow you through out the day. Most dogs won't go to the bathroom if the are in a confined space. If she doesn't use the restroom while she's attached to you, start attaching her to different places in the house and leaving her there. Put her bed and a bone there too. She'll learn that area isn't for going to the bathroom. If she does try to go while attached to you make a loud noise and say OUTSIDE!

Another thing you can try is going outside with her on the leash, stand next to her and in a normal tone repeat, "Go Potty", "Go Potty". When she does, praise her in a "very happy get a treat voice" and pet her.

Also, leave her outside for an hour after she eats. I don't keep a water bowl in the house. If they are thirsty, they can drink outside.

This worked well with both my dogs.

Use a crate just big enough for the dog to turn around in. A dog will not potty in the area it has to lay in. When you let it out, take it outside immediately. Tell it to go potty or go pee etc. getting it used to hearing you tell it to go on demand. After the dog eats or drinks let it out and do the same. Some dogs don't have a bladder that is very big and can not go for long periods without going. Some smaller dogs are very hard to housebreak..like yorkies...

I like the ideal that someone gave of the umbilical method. Very clever and should work to your advantage. Also, Take her outside before the other dogs. Seeing that the others are housebroken, they can hold it until Gidget does her business. Give her commands to go potty. When she does praise her alot. Take her out every half hour. And pick up her food and water and give it to her every half hour (water), Feed her 3 x a day. Leave it down for a half hour and if she doesn't eat it all... pick it up. This will help. IF a dog can pick and choose when they eat or drink, they will pick and choose when they have to go potty. Doing this you are making those choices for her. Best wishes!

are you keeping the new dog in a kennel when you can't watch it 24/7? if not, it might be the free roaming that you are allowing... if you are, and you are taking all 8 dogs out together, than the newbie sees it at social time, try taking the new one out by herself and see if she goes without the distractions... we have a puppy that's 7 months old, if we can't watch him every min, he's in his kennel, he's pretty good about letting us know when he has to go potty, but i don't trust him yet to not chew everything in the house... hope this helps...
