I guess it depends on how much you use it. Mine lasts quiet a while so far. They don't get used all the time, but sometimes. I actually want to get another or two. Then the more you different types of ones you have to use, they last longer then.

Cheaper novilty ones can break easily. Motors die, switches break, wires come off etc. More expensive ones, especially the European made ones should last a long long time. For the best though go for something that has a reputation and a guarantee such as the Lilo, Nea, Eroscillator or Hitachi Magic Wand. OK they are a few dollars more but so what. Divided up by the number of times they get used its not even worth considering. These brands are also very effective!

it would last longer if you only used it once maybe twice a week instead of every 3 hours

That's never happened to me, but the batteries don't last long ;)
