Obsessive / Compulsive disorder, also called "anal retention", (slang) involves OVERdoing everyday yhings, to the extent that they interfere with normal living. For instance, one might wash their hands, repeatedly, to the extent that the skin is damaged. They may need to avoid cracks in a sidewalk, and many, many other "ritualistic" activities. MANIA is over-the-top JOY, BLISS, EXHUBERANCE - with NO regard for the CONSEQUENCES that blindly-joyful - invincible - feeling behaviours can cause. One might spend their entire paycheck, gambling, at a casino, or buy a brand new wardrobe, an the spur of the moment, with no regard to whether the rent has been paid, for instance. Many aspects of OCD mimic those of certain autistic tendancies or even Asperger's syndrome. I'm not a medical doctor. Please go to "DSM:IV" to look for medically-based facts, and seek professional medical assistance, if you feel that you mat suffer from either OCD, or any other condition. Be well.

OCD is basically when someone has a compulsion (they can't stop themselves) from doing something. Sometimes it is repetitively such as checking that the door is locked 3 times. It is an uncontrollable urge to do something

Mania is part of bi-polar disorder or what some people also call manic depression. The mania part is when people are "high" or feeling good. They are very happy and upbeat. It is usually characterized by lots of energy, fast, animated talking and movements. The cycle in bi-polar disorder then goes down to depression, and that is with signs of lethargy, sleeping alot, lack of energy, clouded thoughts, and perhaps loss of concentration and memory

well, psychology isn't an exact science and diagnoses are wrong a lot of the time. from what i know about ocd-it usually revolves around something specific. for example, you have to open and close a cupboard door 3 times before you can actually close it. mania is usually accompanied by depression as bi-polar disorder. i think mania is more general. Like, when someone is suffering from mania, everything is severly irritating to them or they become irrational, responding excessively or violently to things. for example, they may go on a cleaning rampage, but only when they are experiencing mania. think joan crawford in mommy dearest when she's throwing comet all over the bathroom. (if you haven't seen this movie, i recommend it)

Well most of the time OCD is geared to only one action or one thought. With Mania it can be more then one type of problem and unable to be rational.
