See, when I try to bake one, the chopped apples always end up coming out too hard, not softly cooked. I can't leave it in the oven for longer because the crumble topping is already golden crisp and if I leave it any longer it will burn... Do you expert homemakers have any suggestions?

Replace half the flour with oatmeal and make sure you are adding enough sugar.

Stew the apples in sugar and a tiny spot of water before putting in a heatproof dish and adding the topping.

Most apple crisps I"ve seen contain thinly sliced apples, not chopped.... maybe try that.

Also, certain apple varieties are better for baking that others. Most ppl prefer Granny Smith or other firm apple, as they retain their shape, integrity, and texture during baking.

If you DO NOT want that, and want a softer apple, try using Rome, Red Delicious, or Pink Lady varieties. You may even toss in a bit of applesauce to the mix for a saucier, softer result.

Also, be sure you've taken your oven off of "preheat" and put it on "bake." If it stays on prehat, it will cook the top before the insides. IF that's not it, try a lower slower temp (like 325ºF) rather than 375-400ºF.

Not an expert homemaker...but I love to cook...I would suggest cooking the apples and other filling ingredients on the stovetop for awhile first.

While I don't cook the apples first, I do mix them with the sugar and spices and let them sit in the mixing bowl for a short time.

Easy solution, precook the apples almost through in a sauce pan like I do with pie filling.
