My first advice is, DON'T take anything that you find makes the pain worse, even if your doctor says it's "what everyone uses to treat fibro." A medication that helps some people may make the pain unbearable for others, and only by trial and error can you find out what works for you. Your doctor will (if you are fortunate enough to have a doctor who doesn't believe that fibro is an imaginary disease that no one actually has) have you try medications that have helped other people. If those don't work, do not hesitate to tell your doctor that so they can help you find something else. Don't give up, and don't let doctors bully you into taking a medication that doesn't help you.
Get as much exercise as you can without making your pain worse. Find a support group if you can (knowing that you're not alone helps as much as any medication), but at the least, limit your exposure to people who think you're "making it all up" or just imagining the pain -- that is one thing that is SURE to make things worse.
The only medication that I have found helpful for me is a low dose of muscle relaxer -- Skelaxin or Flexeril. It makes me sleepy, and I only take it when I absolutely must, but if I'm unable to do anything anyway, it is better to be in less pain while I'm sitting around doing nothing. Some people get a lot of relief from OTC pain meds, and some from low doses of antidepressants. For some, just getting their weight down to a healthy level makes a world of difference.
There are, alas, no miracle cures, no special diets guarenteed to make the pain disappear forever, and nothing that works even a little bit for every person. As I said, you just have to keep looking until you find what works for you.
(And if you're looking for a pen pal who also has fibro, email me.)

Fibromyalgia (FM) is an increasingly recognized chronic pain illness characterized by widespread musculoskeletal aches, pain and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, general fatigue and sleep disturbances. The most common sites of pain include the neck, back, shoulders, pelvic girdle and hands, but any body part can be involved. Fibromyalgia patients experience a range of symptoms of varying intensities that wax and wane over time.
