I use protein shakes -- I like the Body Fortress brand. They stir easy and taste about as good as the more expensive stuff. EAS also makes a reasonably priced Whey Protein. What's nice about the body fortress is that it mixes nicely with a spoon (although it has more cholesterol than other Whey proteins). I get mine at WalMart for about $12 a tub, which is cheap.

Does the protein make a difference? I guess so. I use it when I feel i need to supplement some protein in my diet. Sometimes I eat a more carbohydrate based meal and want to add some protein to it. If that's the case, I'll drink a shake.

Most of the shakes are just a convenience way to get some additional protein in your diet. You can get the same effect, more or less, by eating a can of tuna or other high-protein source (say milk and peanut butter).

If you've got the extra money and need the convenience of a shake -- go for it. But don't expect Whey Protein to be some magical elixir... I have yet to find one that is.

Good luck.

Protein shakes are OK, but you have to be choosy about which brand. Always check the label - some of them are loaded with sugar. Unfortunately, the ones which tase the best have a ton of sugar.

Get your protein from food as much as possible. I do shakes once in a while after a workout, because they're convenient, more than anything else. The one I use now tastes HORRIBLE, but it's high quality and has no sugar.

Love, Jack.

if you are eating a healthy diet already then you shouldn't need the extra protein. if you are are strength training you are breaking down muscle fibers and having a protein shake/meal after a workout will help repair the fibers--and you need to let those muscles rest for at least a day or 2. your body can only absorb 25 grams of protein at a time, so don't overkill. drink plenty of water to keep muscles hydrated, too.
