because they contain mucus it protects the lungs. When you breathe in air through your nose, it contains lots of tiny things, like dust, dirt, germs, and pollen. If these made it all the way to the lungs, the lungs could get irritated or infected, making it be tough to breathe. and boogers are sticky to catch particles.

Boogers are slimy when fresh. They don't get sticky unless you play with them, like when you roll them around with your fingers. You should just quit that, because when they get too sticky they don't fling well.
