start with a good flea bath made for puppies and grooming. If that doesn't work, you dog may have a skin allergy to another pet's dander or flea bites (this is more common than you may think). Hot Spot is a product that eases the itching but you may actually have to get the dog an allergy medicine from your vet if it gets really bad.
a third possibility is a food allergy, but I'd try the other ideas first.

Well there are quite a few reasons why it is itching but the most common would be due to fleas or dry skin. If when he/she scratches and there is something that looks like dandruff coming off the skin then it is deff. dry skin. To cure that you just have to buy some medicated shampoo and conditioner for dry skin. If not then it can be fleas. If your dog already has fleas then you would have to go to a local pet store or Vet and get flea bath to remove them and from then on use a flea repellent such as Hartz or Frontline. They also have medicated shampoo and conditioner for fleas as well. A good website to check out if you wanted to order it is www.drsfostersmith.com or petsmart.com for some cheaper prices. Hope that helps....

You do not say what type of breed. Some breeds are prone to a mite, being genetic. There could be a multitude of reasons for the scratching, from fleas, mites to allergies.
You need to find the source to eradicate the problem.

I'm sure you've checked for fleas, so try what i did. I made up a concoction of tea tree oil, tyme, and other herbs I had on hand (the first 2 should work) and put into a spray bottle. I bathed my dog and my cats with regular soap, then sprayed them with this mixture. It cured them of itcheys and of mange. Good luck.

Fleas or Dry skin
Take your dog in to the groomer for a bath and a tick dip.

Could be fleas or dry skin. Take it to the vet or groomers, they will suggest something to help the dog. You can't find answers any where but from them.

my dog had the same problem,i had a great dane. She also itched alot.I thought it was fleas or ticks. I took her to the vet,he said she had Brandsiek, its something they get from the mother. So i used "aalwyn" cristals,u just put two in her food.you get the shampoo asswell.Do not give her any bread, that apparently adds to the itching! Your dog most likely has an allergy to something. My dog gets really bad allergies in the summer, and the vet told us to give him Benadryl, and he's been fine ever since!

if the dog has no flees, or no dry skin, sometimes it can be be some kind of allergy from the food. either take him to the vet or change the food brand by trial & error

Check if he has fleas, a good flea collar will work, if it is not fleas take him to see a vet, he might have excma or some skin condition, they will tell you how to treat it.
