I was told by my vet a dog's temp should be somewhere around 101-105. My Female Cocker's (20lbs) temp was a consistent 101.8 until she died and my male (32 lbs) was 102 even...they were healthy and died of natural cause/old age.

Like humans a dogs temperature regardless of breed or weight is always the same. 38.5c
A rectal thermometer is the only accurate way of getting a dogs temperature.
If pregnant and about to whelp the temp. will drop a whole degree, that is to 37.5c
If running a high temperature it can reach to 42c.
I hope your dog is ok, if there is a variation from 38.5c for no apparent reason I would seek a vet. There can be many reasons, from localized infections to infectious diseases to cause this.
