I just want to see and hear for myself what is actually preached and goes on there, instead of getting all my information third-hand and through the media. Do you have to have special permission or something, or can you just slip in at the back and observe?

yes of course you can go in mosque
there's no special permission, anyone can go into the mosque
but what u have to know is in mosque when muslims are praying, they have separate room between man and woman.
but there's no wall between them just a line on the floor
just to mark where the place for man/woman is
umm.. the man are in front and the woman are behind the man.
well if you wanna hear the preach, u better go on Friday noon
that's when they're praying
if u feel uncomfortable or worry if u bothering their pray, jus sit near the door close to the man place. and for ur female friend do the same things but sit close to the woman place..

or u can jus ask the people who live in the mosque, you know like a priest in church
i'm sure they'd love to help you...
okay...
hope u find what u're looking for
Good luck!!!

Yeah surely, u can attend the services ......... just meet the Imam (Head Preacher) of the Mosque and ask him abt it, and he will make arrangements for it, so as to keep u separated from men. Its a very Noble thought u have, to take information first-hand urself, instead of through someone else. u can observe what he preaches and have an open mind abt it, and u can make a decision for urself without any pressure. Islam is a religion of Peace, Harmony, Love & Humanity and Islam has never forced anyone to become a Muslim, and Arab Christians are a living proof of it. May u find the True Path. Peace to All.

Most mosques welcomes everyone! You'll be more than welcome to go to the men's part or the women's part of the Mosque! In order to respect the atmosphere and those around you, dress appropriately (no string tops, shorts) and respect the customs of the mosque like taking off your shoes when you enter (only enter bear foot or with socks).

Also there's another catch, usually anyone who enters a mosque should be clean/presentable. Usually Muslims do something called the Wudu (the act of washing parts of the body using clean water performed by Muslims, as part of the preparation for ritual worship, salah).

Check out the sources I listed for more information.
http://www.beconvinced.com is a good website that helps non-Muslims understand Islam (it tackles many misconceptions about Islam)!

I'm so happy and proud how you want to find out about Islam first-hand insted of believing what the Media brainwashes people with! People should be more like you :) Good luck!

what rubbish your answerer Poetic1 talks! I went to a mosque recently to see what goes on, and they were very friendly and pleased that non-muslims were showing an interest. They were quite happy to answer our questions about their religion (and no, Poetic1, it doesn't include killing all infidels or treating women as furniture - do try to read a little more widely than where you're getting your ideas from now). Sorry, that doesn't actually answer the question - I don't know if you can just go in uninvited - I went by invitation. Do you know any local muslims you could ask to take you there?

I am a woman and not a Muslim. I have been to services. You will find them very inspirational. You might try an Orthodox Jewish service also. Make sure you sit with the women at both services. Cover you head at a Mosque, and at the Synagogue-if you are married.

during the week most muslims go to the mosque to pray and then go home. some stay after prayers to study the Quran. if you wanna see how we pray and what saw say in our prayers ( ps: all in arabic )
then you must go on fridays during the friday afternoon prayer!
about 30 minutes before the prayer the Imam gives a speach in english!!
different topics from the holy Quran!
to know about the time of the prayer and speach try to go to the islamic centre and ask any one about the time friday prayers.

there could also be classes but i think that you must sign up for!!!

good luck to you and i hope you enjoy the experience!!!

With special permission perhaps. Men and women pray usually separated to avoid any sensual thoughts.

As for entering the mosque as a non-Muslim, it doesn't matter. You're welcomed there.

so some distance as attending Muslim worship centers, you will desire to first communicate with the community imam to ascertain it relatively is high-quality. some branches of Islam would enable non-Muslims to attend, others won't; so you ought to ascertain earlier than time. A mosque, as others have pronounced, is a house of prayer. A community center is purely that; nevertheless there's a prayer room somewherein the placement.

Everyone is welcome into the Mosque. You can just walk in (Maybe with some other Muslim women you know). However if you phone up first you can be given a good time to come when their are other muslim women there and a talk is sceduled. You might feel more comforatable with a small head scarf on, but it is totally upto you if you want to.
