My dog, Butler, is going through a paralysis. We are not sure if it is temporary or long term. I took him to the vet with a paralyzed paw and it spread throughout his entire body. One week later he is scooting around and pulling up on his back legs. I would appreciate any ideas that would make it easier but one that is extremely important is going potty. He is going potty once a day and is poing once every 3 days. Anything would be helpful in my quest to get him back to his old self. Thank you. Lisa

they do make wee pads that wrap around the dog so he doesn't urinate on himself. They are kind of like diapers. The pooping problem could be him not be able to control his bowel movements. You could ask your vet about expressing his bladder and have him show you how so you can do it at home. It's really easy and will help him empty his bladder a few times a day. And I don't think there really is anything you can do to make him get back to his old self.

I just rescued and older dog with her back legs in paralysis. It is more complicated for her because they let her get so over weight and never made her exercise herself.

I can tell you not to let him get lazy make him work it on short easy walks and do not over feed him to compensate for his short comings. This has been very hard for my daughter and I to rescue her in this condition, but we make her get up and go outside everyday day and she is doing better. It has been about a month and we are just now starting to see some results. I told her the other day she was wobbling so much better.

He may go potty more if you take him out and make him work it a little more. He may be holding it as long as he can simply to avoid the stress of trying to use his legs.

Talk to the vet about exercises and massages you can do for him. I bet most of them can be done while you sit around and a little tv with him.

Are you carrying your dog out to do his business? If not, it may be to much for him. Try taking him out more often. I am sure he isn't eating as much if he is unable to move around. Exercise is one of the things that promotes good bowel health. I would not let this poor animal live in this condition for long. It is a pet owners responsibility to be a good friend to their pet by sometimes letting go. It is a hard decision to make, but just think of the quality of your dogs life. If your vet feels he has a good prognosis then stick with it, but if your vet doesn't then maybe it is time to let go. Good Luck, I know pets really are mans best friend.

Awww, as an animal lover I'm so sad to hear that. How old is he? Is he elderly? I don't know what could be wrong I just wanted to tell you I feel sad for your dog. Maybe knowing his age could help someone else answer your question better. I hope he gets back to his old self soon!
