When we know a cause, we can prevent a problem. That is the golden use of knowing that. Less people can have eating disorders if they don't let those beautiful images they see in the media have so much power inside their minds.
Young men and women can know that those models they see on TV, or magazines, have lots of professional aid before the set or the photographic session, from hairstyle and makeup experts to diets, exercises, and that when they just wake up they don't look that glamourous way.
They have to realize it is OK to be what they are and stop wishing they looked as a supermodel.

I don't believe the media "causes" anything. The media can be a powerful influence, but ultimately, we each DECIDE what we do with the information presented to us.
I suppose you are referring to the fact that the media presents all these beautiful people, and it makes people (especially women) feel all insecure and sometimes do dangerous things to become thin and beautiful.
Again, I don't think the media MAKES people do this. But I agree it is an influence. Personally, I get motivated when I see hot looking guys with nice bodies. It makes me get to the gym and eat right.
But I have a nice body to begin with. I can imagine that if someone had a hard time with their weight, that it could be discouraging. The only advice I can give is for each of us to strive for the best WE can be. That's what I'm doing, and it seems to be working.
Love, Jack.

The significance of KNOWING anything that causes something is to attempt to fix it. Unfortunately that doesn't happen overnight. The roll models out there know now that what they do (like young beautiful women) can and does have a major impact on young girls. If they KNOW that what they are doing may cause a problem, maybe they can take the personal responsibility to be a good roll model. If you don't know the CAUSES of a major problem, then how are you going to 1) fix or partially fix it, and 2) understand it.

I imagine if a link were every established it would have little more significance than discoverring that sunlight caused eating disorders. People tend to look at media as something they can change but in reality it is as much a force of nature as a hurricane. It will do what it will do.

The significance is that knowledge is power. To be above the influence of magazines and television that constantly drone out what the "perfect" human image is supposed to be. Strength comes from self-confidence and being able to think for yourself. And that is acheived by loving yourself and not worrying about what others think of you. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. If we were all the same, the world would be extraordinarily boring, don't you think.

1. Donate your television to the local thrift shop.
2. Cancel all your mass market magazine subscriptions, and buy only special-interest ones that are NOT ABOUT FOOD!
3. Make a study of the cynical, mean techniques of advertising to people who are overweight.
4. Make a study of the cynical, mean techniques of advertising for junk food.

You'd have to establish it first. Can you? I don't know what the significance is once you've established it to be true. Perhaps you could start a support group or write your congressman or something.

The media is not the cause, but it sure is one of the triggers.

I don't know that there is exactly some sort of significance. It's something else to blame.

I don't know that to be true. The media does not cause one to have psychological imbalances.
