Old St. Francis, the worlds fist hippy. Hear this story. He was the son of a wealthy fabric merchant. His father wanted him to take over the business. Frank said "no Papa, I want to be a mad monk, maybe found a whole order of mad monks devoted to radical poverty and run around with straw in our beards." Papa said "screw that, take these bolts of expensive wool downtown and see what you can sell them for."
Well on the way downtown Frank met some beggars. They said "Kind sir, could you spare a coin, winter is coming and we have no warm clothing."
"This," said Frank "Is your lucky day."
Then he went home and told his Papa. Who sued him. Took his own son to court for the value of the cloth.
The father won. Francis stood in open court and said "I have nothing to pay with but this- took off the cloak he was wearing and left to become a monk and to pursue a life of radical poverty.
Francis of Assisi is the founder of the Franciscans a world-wide Catholic order today with massive holdings in real estate, hospitals, schools and other institutions.
