Gaining muscles consists of 3 elements, each of which is EQUALLY important.

1. Exercise
2. Nutrition
3. Rest

If you have absolutely no money, then you're in trouble with #1, because you need at least 1 set of adjustable dumbells. Without dumbells, you can do pushups and crunches, but that's not enough.

As far as nutrition goes, save your money on whey protein and skim milk, instead of meat and eggs. Eat whey before and after exercise, and milk before you go to sleep. If you buy whey in big tubs, it's actually much cheaper than meat. In Canada, I'm able to buy whey protein in bulk for US$5.35/lb.

Remember to rest at least a day between exercising the same body part. And sleep 8 hours a day. I guess rest is free, unless you subscribe to the idea that time is money. :P

You can get in fabulous shape with zero equipment.

Do the classics, situps, push ups, Jumping jacks.

Walk up and down your stairs a lot.

life weights around your house--large cans of food are a good start, laundry detergent bottles, milk cartons (filled) are 8 pounds.

Go to the local library and check out a book on exercise, or watch tv shows. There are plenty of cheap, even free ways to get and stay in shape!

Sure and its always free. Muscle tissue has no use for money. Isometrics. Do a little rock hunting and find palm sized round rocks to do curls with. Look for heavier ones when you need them. For your legs, run up and down stairs. Incidentally, you can't actually gain muscle without surgery or some kind of not-yet-developed means of genetic manipulation. What you can do is improve strength and performance of the muscle you already have.
