I think it's morbid and furthermore I think it's meaningless. Not that it didn't mean anything that Jesus (supposedly) died for the sins of humankind (which I don't buy because I think it's unfair that people can have their sins washed away like that, with absolutely no merit in it) but people have made it meaningless through time. Too many christians use the crucifix to show their religion and supposedly their faith but hardly ever pratice what that same religion or Christ himself tried to teach. They just carry that little crucifix around hanging in their necks as they go on commiting sin after sin without ever feeling the weight of Christ's cross on their backs and shoulders, which is a way of saying they don't feel the weight of guilt on their conscience, probably because they lack that conscience. I don't know, I'm just assuming. On top of that I find it extremely hard to believe that someone as good as Jesus apparently was could have anything such as Christianity and all the churches it spawned in mind. I see nothing of Christ in most of today's self-proclaimed christians except that cross in which he supposedly died that they carry around and call a crucifix. By the way, nice comparison with the "rifle to commemorate JFK" thing. An accurate observation if I may say so. So could be the revolver to commemorate Gandhi. Now there was a good man, Gandhi.

Yes it is. Someone has already pointed out that it predates Christianity so..... that leads us think someone else might benefit from the prevalence of the cross.
Tao for instance who's mark was the cross and was a triune God none the less would tell a tale to a thinker I believe.
Christians God said to make no images so I think that about covers it good luck on your search.

No the cross is a symbol fo the willing sacrifice.

In order for your rifle simile to be accurate JFK would have to have known he was going to be shot, and willingly let it happen rather than being the victim of an assassination.

Yeah well actually he was supposed to be seated on a Throne but it seems the Jews got there own story wrong.....God gave Abraham a second option; but they, when the time came, chose to get addicted to the fulfillment of Prophecy...they chose Barabbas (Hebrew: the Son of God) over their Saviour; they chose suffering over life and here we all are going through Gods three days (three thousand years)...and we ain't all happy about it...But if Jesus the man carried his Cross then I for one will carry mine along side him...As a wise neighbour of mine said 'The Cross of for carrying not dragging through the mud'...Check out Mel Gibson's film: Our man going through his paces; the full glory of God and of all Revelation. A good Prophet wouldn't give a nickle for his best pronouncements.....everything is surrendered to the Lamb.....Everything.
Don't disrespect the Cross dude!

The guy above me's argument is appeal to tradition, which is a logical fallacy by the way. I think it is a little morbid, but it will never change.

It's hideous, I as much like an electric chair fastened to the wall or round my neck or as the equivalent of a crucifix it might come with a fried corpse sitting in it...totally hideous!

It is morbid, but it is a constant reminder to us that what was done was wrong. To remind us never to forget the atrocities and cruelty done to one man out of jealousy It reminds us how low people can stoop to, how cruel they can be in the name of their beliefs

It's just what it is an instrument of execution. But for christians it is glorious since the ressurection of Jesus.
In pictures of the Martyrs they are often depicted with the instrument of their martyrdom.
F.ex. St Paul with a sword.
