The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) usually conducts Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination twice a year. The examination is conducted to select candidates for direct entry candidates as officers to the following four training academies:

Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.
*
Officers Training Academy (OTA), Madras.
*
Indian Naval Academy(INA), Goa.
*
Indian Air Force Academy(IAFA), Hydearabad.
a) Qualification: All unmarried male graduates are eligible to appear for IMA & OTA whereas the qualification for Naval Academy is B.Sc with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering. The qualification for the Air Force Academy is Degree with Mathematics , Physics or equivalent stream.
b) Age: The candidate should be atleast 18 years at the time of appearing for the examination. However, it is 24 years for OTA, 23 years for IMA, 21 years for Naval Academy & 22 years for Air Force.
c) Nationality: A candidate must be either
i) a citizen of India, or
ii) a subject of Bhutan, or
iii) a subject of Nepal, or
iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India).
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.
CDS examination is usually conducted twice a year by the UPSC in the month of February and October. The examination is conducted to select candidates for direct entry candidates as officers for the following four training academy.
1) IMA: Indian Military Academy (Dehradun).
2) OTA: Officers training Academy.
3) Indian Naval Academy (Goa).
4) Indian Air Force (Begumpet, Hyderabad).
Selection Procedure
The process of selecting cadets for the Combined Defence Services is split into three phases:
1. A written examination held by the Union Public Service Commission.
2. Service Selection Board Interview.
3. A medical examination by a Service Medical Board.
