My 1.5 yr old baby , has suddenly started to salivate profusely since the last 4 days .. , she has got a tendency to keep her mouth open , and her tongue held slightly out , ( i guess this is what is causing the salivating ..). but the cause for concern is that this habit just started 4 days back ... she used to suck her thumb only when she slept , but now she is not sucking her finger either ( maybe it pains her , due to which she dosent sleep soundly . she also used to chew on solid food like biscut s and fruit pieces ,, which also she has stopped ??? the doctors that i showed to are of the opinion that she has some infection in the gullet due to which she finds swollowing difficult , it could also be a nasal block due to which she is breathing thru her mouth , ( to explain why the mouth is kept open ) .. this apart my baby is perfectly healthy and playful no signs of any weakness or illness ... it worrys us to see her keeping her mouth open and salivating ...

could she be cutting teeth? rub her gums with your finger...how does she react? if she is teething, it could cause nasal cavity swelling, desire for softer foods and an increase in salivation. does she pull her ears, have a running nose, low grade fever or have any rash on her bum or around her mouth? these are signs of teething also. try wrapping an ice cube in a damp washcloth, tie it shut and let her suck on it. if things are swollen or causing mouth pain, this will help both. chewing on frozen fruit does the same thing.
4 days is not really a habit...just a signal to you that something is up.... your a good parent to notice
hope this helps

My first guess would be cutting teeth. My 1 year old boy, is like a faucet and always has his tongue hanging out, and always wet all over his shirt. I'm wondering though about your doctor, did they prescribe her anything for an infection? Maybe a second opinion would be in order. Usually doctors are able to make a diagnosis, not just guesses. Good luck!

Sounds like some painful teething. Does she have her eyeteeth or molars yet. My son's came in 2 at a time and it is painful - everything is painful, chewing & swallowing so they will not eat or drink and will be reluctant to talk. Wet a washcloth and freeze it - let her bite on that to help push those teeth through.
