tapping to hear a hollow sound is one way..if its hallow, it has begun to break down, but a produce manager once told me its also the smell, if the smell is strong, don't buy it...better to buy an unripe one, let it sit out for a day or so at home, and then eat it..

the surest bet is to buy then when they are available during winter. don't buy them during the other seasons.
