You walk a mile down the sidewalk - no reward.

You walk a mile on a path in the woods - more of a reward.

You cut a trail a mile long through the jungle to reach an ancient hidden temple - very rewarding.

The easy way is always the well-traveled way and all the rewards have already been taken.

The hard way is the less-traveled way and you can get a reward there.

Getting on American Idol without ever working at learning to sing will bring no reward. Years of hard work becoming a good singer will bring great rewards.

Hard work can also be rewarding if it is manual labor. The reward can be by means of building muscle, losing weight, or working outside to get a tan.

If it's hard work on something you want or something someone you love wants, it is rewarding. You feel good about it and feel like you belong. If it's hard work to do something that nobody cares about or they end up tearing it down like they did before, it is not rewarding.

Doing my best gives me a sense of satisfaction.
The rewards are internal, and often external.
I have a successful career primarily due to hard work.
"Hard" does not mean exhausting or stressful to me.
I take it as diligent, focused, and ethical effort done to the best of my ability.

there is a sense of satisfaction gained through hard work, which a person who takes the easy way can't experience.

as a simple example imagine the feeling of standing at the top of a mountain you have just climbed.
