My friends name is Turner - so I'll follow the answers to this!
I think it's origin is in wood turning - someone skilled in turning wooden objects - like legs for tables

Like most surnames Cat Id say it relates to a trade such as the name implies Taylor Ironmonger baker butcher sailor and the list goes on and on. A turner was and is a person that works with wood and it is probably it's origin I hope this is the kind of answer you were looking for
