During a long (12-hour) weekday layover at Honolulu airport, would like to visit Diamond Head by mass transit. Can someone show me the way?

The Bus has a couple of routes (19 and 20) that leave from the street on the upper level of the airport. Ask around to find the stop in the median. Just make sure you're getting on the bus that goes toward "Waikiki Beach & Hotels" and not the other direction.

The bus driver can usually tell you where to hook up with a route to go to Diamond Head--probably #58 at Ala Moana, the state's largest shopping mall. That bus will let you off near Kapiolani Community College on Monsarrat. You'd need to walk down the street a bit and up a road through a tunnel bored through the tuff ring to find yourself inside the crater. There's also a National Guard installation in there.

You can climb to a spot near the peak by a series of trails, steps, and tunnels--which I hear they've lighted or considered lighting recently. Probably safer, but will take some of the fun out of it. The view from the top is spectacular, so don't forget to pack your camera in your carry on.

Have fun, and malama pono!
