There are loads of sewing books available that show you the basic stitches. You can either buy them or borrow them from a library.
There are very few colleges that offer classes where you can get an actual qualification.
If you want someone to actually show you the stitches, volunteer as a helper at the nearest residential home for the elderly. The elderly love to have visitors who will sit and talk to them.

If you have cable or satellite their are sewing programs on HGTV and on DIY channels.
There are also groups like yahoo groups that have discussions and where you can ask questions.
Parks and rec offers classes in some areas
There are videos and dvds available as well.
