Can the mind really be trained to actually ignore something, or someone, like it doesn't even exist? Do we need to go to a psychaitrist for it?

You can really only think about one thing at a time. Usually we jump back and forth among several different things at one, but you are only tuned to one thing at any given instant. You might have 5 or 6 things that you are switching between, sort of like channel hopping. So if you stop switching and stay with one thing everything else gets blocked. This is called "focus". If this weirds you out you can go to a psychiatrist and help pay his mortgage.

What kind of "things"? Music? Voices (real or imagined)?
I don't know if you can train yourself to ignore it or not. I, for one, am totally annoyed by music when I'm working and can't tune it out. But I can tune out people talking around me.
Do you need to go to a psychiatrist? I don't think so. What would be the point, other than to help pay his mortgage!

The mind is capable of anything you want it to do. I think that it is a learned behavior. You can choose to ignore something, or someone and even make them disappear if you wanted to as if the something never existed. I don't think I would see a Psychiatrist for it. But, if you think you would be more comfortable seeing a Psychiatrist then you should do what feels right for you.

No,just "be still"as my ma would say.Concentrate on you...have you ever relaxed your whole body starting from your toe nails to the ends of your hair.Master that,(meditation) and listening to yourself will come so naturally. You can tune out anything.
