If you want a dog who will alert you when someone comes near your house and is just in general a detterent to criminals, any large-ish breed dog will do. Pretty much every dog, without training, will bark or otherwise alert you to when someone comes near your house. Dogs have better hearing than us, so even people sneaking around they can hear and will let you know. Criminals will be deterred from breaking into a house when they hear the sound of a barking dog--it means that either the people who live in the house know they're there, or that there's a potentially dangerous dog inside. I have a 95 lb. dog and his bark is very loud and scary-sounding. He wouldn't hurt a fly, but his "watchdog alarm" is deterrent enough.
A trained gaurd/protection dog requires specialized training (look in to Schutzhund training) and is a lot of work. These dogs must be trained properly so they protect when they are supposed to, but don't also go off and maul the neighbor's 3 year old. If you have a dog that requires a BEWARE OF DOG sign, that is a huge legal liability. If that dog ever injures anyone, you are legally responsible, especially if you already knew that your dog is fierce and did nothing about it.

I have a minature pinscher and he's the most fierce dog you can imagine. He won't even let a squirrel get too close to the house, or he's at the door in a second, growling and snarling. He's a tiny little package, but has more balls than a dog 10x his size. The few people who underestimated him got bit - woe the man who underestimates the little dog.

Well that depends if you want a guard dog or an alarm dog!
Most dogs will tell you if anyone is about they have amazing hearing, but if you want an attack dog go for the bigger breeds. like Rotties, German shepards, Dobermans, or even a Belguim Shepard they are fearless.

Depends on what you're guarding your house from. Frankly, almost ANY dog can be trained to bark and alert anyone inside to people coming near the house. And frankly, most [though not all] intruders will be deterred by ANY dog in the house, whether it's a poor guard dog or not, just because the potential is there. Big dogs tend to be seen as more aggressive and scary, but don't discount little dogs, either, because... they can actually be pretty darned mean.
Any dog TRAINED to guard your house can also be a liability, if, say, the mailman comes too close, so be careful of encouraging aggressiveness if you want a good 'guard' dog.
Just having a dog is seen as a pretty good deterent to the vast majority of criminally minded people. There are easier targets out there.
