These days most people work too far from home to ride horses or bikes or walk to work. At present, most cities don't have a good enough public transport system. However the high cost of gas at this time may bring about a change in the transportation situation.
I'm old enough to come from a generation where there was always at least one parent at home at all times. During my teenage years, we had cars so horny teenagers had somewhere to make out. Long Live Drive-in Movie Theaters!!!

Because cars are the latest invention for transportation. We can't ride horses because not all of us wants to own one and take care of it? They can't really run long distances, too. I don't mind riding bikes, but... what if it rains and it's windy? Walking is a good idea, too. But in the end, you're gonna get all sweaty and might want to change clothes before you go to school or work. Gotta take life for granted I guess.

Agreed. I once imagined what it'd be like if they started making different types of Bicycles instead of vehicles, and all the highways and roads were turned into bikeways. Designer bicycles for the flashy. And taxi Bikes with two pedalers per person and a cart in the back for the injured or elderly to ride in. It's possible but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

For speed, comfort, and the ability to travel long distances in a short period of time.
For people who do not live in a metro area, it's kind of hard to walk or ride a bike 50 miles to work each day ;)
While we're on the topic, why do we need houses or computers? Couldn't we all just live off the land in a magical utopia with karl marx as our leader!?

Ummm, lets see, we have cars to drive becuase we have further distances to go maybe....when people rode horses all the time, they lived/worked on farms/ranches, not in offices and buildings like we do today. Also, technology might be playing a HUGE part in what we do today....besides, we just look better in cars than on horses and buggies, although it would be nice to live life like they did back the...horse shoes and hay cost alot less than fuel, oil, up keep on the vehicles.......

We have cars for obvious reasons like transportation and protection from the elements. It would be better if we walked more and rode bikes but we are too accustomed to leisure.

Over the past 100 years, cars have become such an important part of our economy and everyones life....to give them up right now would cause incredible chaos and problems...unfortunately we are stuck with them for the time being.
