It's a matter of control. Along with hitting her (the really easy part to see) goes the worst part, making her feel small. They almost always go together. And it's easy for her to believe that he's just right about how bad she is.

"No one else would want you!" "You are too stupid to figure anything out." "I wouldn't have to treat you this way if you were a halfway decent woman!"

Those are the kinds of things she starts to believe after years of hearing them from someone who says he loves her (and, in his broken way, he does). So she tries to do better, and always fails, but she loves him, too. But, because he feels out of control, he will again need to control her in ways that hurt her.

The thing is, there is not enough time in eternity to learn what it would take to keep him happy - and when he's happy, he's so charming that she believes she can learn. There is something broken inside of him, and she will never be able to fix it. He strikes out at her because his dreams for himself haven't come true, and because he doesn't know any other way to make himself feel better. Sadly, HE is the only one who can change that. She can't even get him to see that there's a problem in him. She'll get smacked around if she tries.

She should talk to someone at a woman's shelter, a group for abused women, or see a therapist to help her see more clearly that IT ISN'T HER FAULT! He will almost always try to stop her from talking to these people. And she is often too afraid to call.

She may well end up dead or in the hospital. After her broken jaw heals, she often goes back to him because (remember?) she's too stupid to figure anything out, or no one else would ever want her, or it was all her fault to begin with, and besides, he's REALLY sorry now. And he really is sorry, but that doesn't mean it won't happen again.

If it's you, get some help. If it's a friend, find out where she can get some help and keep telling her of new places you find. (Call your local police department, department of social services, mental health center and so on, and ask where an "abused wife" can get help. They'll know. But be sure to say "abused wife" because that's what we're talking about.) If there are children in the home, the boys are learning to hurt women, and the girls that women should be hurt. If you or your friend won't get help for yourself or herself, for God's sake, do it for the kids. Having Mommy dead or broken and Daddy in prison is not going to be very good for them.

Abusive men almost never get better. In fact, they almost always get worse. The beatings get worse, his treatment of the children gets worse, her feelings of helplessness and worthlessness get worse. Keeping the lights off during sex so your partner can't see you crying because if you *don't* have sex it gets worse, is not the way anyone should live.
