because they are above the law and are probably free masons aswell.i think such predators seek out careers jobs where they will be close to children rather than it being a priest perversion.mmm just heard a strange breathing noise behind me so id best stop chatting about religion

Because molesting little children is a medical disorder which is psychological in nature.
In reality, paedophiles are present in all walks of life. However, some will be lured into professsions which involve contact with children.
If a priest, or anyone who is a community figure (e.g. teacher, doctor, police officer), is accused or convicted of child related offences; then it becomes more well known and publicised than if a non-community figure (e.g. a banker, solicitor or accountant) was convicted or accused of the same thing.
In addition, a lot of the publicity is directed at the authorities for not taking measures to stop paedophiles from getting into occupations which involve contact with children. There are measures in place to screen people, but some will always slip through the net - especially if they have no previous convictions.

The priests are doing this because they are not allowed to have sex or be married, and because the Catholic church is so male-oriented, their work brings them into contact with a lot of boys (boy's schools, boy's choirs, divinity students, etc.) I think it's sort of like a prison situation - the conditions are contributing to the behavior. It used to be a lot worse, when priests were in charge of reformatories and private schools that only had male students, but it's still pretty bad and priests who do this shame the church. Maybe that's another reason why they do it - to make the church look bad because they resent the celibacy rule. I don't know, but I do think that the situation would be helped by allowing priests to marry and have families.

First off - "so many" is actually not that many at all. You don't see press coverage on all the "good" priests out there. You're seeing a lot of coverage on a very small number of people.
Second, you get bad apples in EVERY group. It's more horrifying when you discover that someone like a priest or teacher or cop (someone in a position of authority, especially moral authority) is doing these terrible things, but stasticially, you're going to run into a few bad apples in every basket. Sad, but true.
Don't blame a religion or a god for the acts of a few.

Someone answered "only in America", RUBISH!! The problem with religion is that it attracts two certain types of person. The first is the type that loves others and believes in the tenents of the bible/holy book. These people seem to be few and far between. The other, more prevelant, type are those who want power and arent smart enough to get into politics. This type of person is around in every aspect of daily life, from the teacher who belittles the students, law enforcement/military who bully others and supervisors/managers who make your work life hell. Unfortunately there is nothing legal you can do about the early signs of a Hitleresq pervert and by the time they become truly twisted they are usualy just smart enough to bully their subordenants into covering for them. This is one of the sadest facts of life.

The last thing God wants is when his follower do the very things they were to stop others from doing. What these priests do is not only wrong and stupid, it is sinful and an embarrassment to all Christians.
The fire burns hotter for the good who have turned bad, than the bad who have never seen the light.
God is real...sadly, these so called "priests" don't get it...

I do not believe religion is good...
But I believe the vow of celibacy coupled with the guilt of not being able to turn off the sexual urge is responsible for turning priests into pedophiles. I don't think they go into the ministry hoping one day to assault children. I think they start as normal young men with normal sexual desires, but their religion told them sex was bad and dirty so they are wracked with guilt over having any sexual feeling at all and they think giving themselves to God and taking a vow of celibacy is the solution. But of course no matter how much they pray, they can't turn off the urge and the guilt consumes them. Eventually, after years of unhealthy sexual repression, it all explodes into something twisted and they take it out on someone naive and innocent hoping that at least no mortal will ever know their dirty little secret. I believe the churches themselves are equally guilty for these crimes because they preached the venom that caused these creeps to turn out this way.

These men who supposedly work for the lord are mistakingly idolised by religious followers and it's the ultimate deceit - The world is a crazy place, find your own faith and beliefs, look into yourself, you know yourself deep down what is right in the world and what is wrong, never follow or idolise anyone who claims to have a message from god, they will let you down, they are after all only humans too with faults and deceptions - Find your own path.

Great question...
They are kiddie fiddling, and that ain't in the Bible anywhere (I checked):
and the Lord definitily did not say
"DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO, now bend over little boy"
sick sick sick...perverts the lot of them
The good thing about it all though, is that all the lw suits from people that this has happened to is threatening to bankrupt the Catholic church in the states at least...

You know, if this happened in any other organization...
Imagine Wal-mart's managers were molesting little kids. Imagine that when complaints arose, they didn't turn in the managers, or even fire them, just moved them to another store, multiple stores.
Are you KIDDING? The government would crucified wal-mart's board of directors faster than you could say "clean up in aisle 6." Boycotts would have been everywhere, people wouldn't take their kids into the store... Only the catholic church could survive a scandal like that.
