People in Britain are taught to be polite...I actually have a British friend, and he said the some people there still have tea time, and they are taught not to show their feelings in public. Some are still rude I would expect, since no body's perfect, and no matter what country you are in there are always rude people, and everybody slips sometimes.
Just go into a chat room...You'll find some rude English people, but also some nice ones

I think it depends on what country you are from.
If you are in a metropolitan area in an international country away from the US people are probably used to being polite. Especially in touristy areas.
If there is a culture clash you might come off as being rude because other people who aren't exposed to too much politeness are probably too casual & think being too formal is not really neccesary.
Did that make sense?
I almost didn't understand what I said...
Anyway I think being polite is good. You won't loose anything by being polite. In fact people will usually be polite right back to you...

Yes we are brought up to be very polite and not to offend others, when we suddenly get cocky with it, we are looked at like we have 3 heads so we retreat and go back to been the polite Brit again, I have cousins in Australia who I speak to often on the phone and every time I do and seemed shocked by something outrageous they say about their own country they say 'oh, your so English', it makes me laugh when they say that, guess we are all 'just so English' but that's what you get for been too polite.

There is no such thing as being too polite - but being polite is just good manners - some of us were taught such good manners by our parents.
Regrettably, modern society seems to have forgotten this and so many people below say the age of 30 no longer display good manners because they have not been taught them either by their parents or at school.

yes its true but there is no such thing as being too polite..........if the world followed the example british people have set we would have world peace.....everyone will be giving instead of always taking and letting the poor people get poorer and rich get richer......i only wish america can become polite too maybe in 10,000 years i figure that how long it would take us to stop rebelling against our British herritage and start doing what's moraly right

Once upon a time yes. Nowadays, it's hard to find these people. Most of the time we hear foul language, comment on nudity as if it was ok. There are those who still are polite but too polite??? I can't answer that.

I'd qualify that by saying that some British people are polite. Some of them are incredibly rude! For example, when you're in the supermarket and you stop to look at something and someone comes and stands in front of you! Makes me so mad!

I think that used to be true but not so much nowadays. I work in retail management and I find people can be extremely rude. For instance, instead of saying excuse me before they speak, customers just start talking at me from 6ft away, even if I have my back to them. I think that's just down right rude and ignorant. I might be there to help but I am human and I deserve to be spoken to as such, just like every other person.

This is an important issue. It affects our standing. I think it is very important always to be polite, even in the face of hostility....but never to the point of hypocrisy. I feel we Brits have gone a step too far with hypocrisy, at least in the minds of those who hear us.
