It's a term that is commonly misquoted from the Koran. It's actual meaning was those who worship polytheistically (i.e they have multiple gods) but many have taken it to mean those who do not follow Islam.
Don't make this mistake.

Infidel actually means some who isn't "fidel" to God.
Fidel means true, or following what is being asked of him or her.
So yes, an infidel does mean a person who is a non believer...but this meaning actually goes more with the word "Kufar". But you would be a Kufar by being an infidel to God...Becaus in not following what you are told, you are siding with the Kufar against God. And basically taking them as thier lord.
I hope this answers your question...

there have been many people who have given quotes from quran saying that Allah asks u to kill infidels or non-beleivers. but how many people know what a infidel is in islam.
in·fi·del (nf-dl, -dl)
n.
1. An unbeliever with respect to a particular religion, especially Christianity or Islam.
2. One who has no religious beliefs.
3. One who doubts or rejects a particular doctrine, system, or principle
if this is the infidel u are talking and linking to islam, then u are wrong. an infidel is not a man/woman from the opposite Faith. it simply means a person who is leading astray from the STRAIGHT PATH, which leads to God. in layman terms, it means, a person who commits sin. and every right religion and God will say the same thing.
WHO IS AN INFIDEL/ unbeleiver/ kufr?
who are not kind and compassionate to entire humankind
infidels are people who torture others,
who dont help needy ,
who commit adultary, who lie, steal and kill
a person who worships idols
those who bear false witness against brothers
those who dont serve their parents and community
those who take taxes
those who associate false Gods
those who do not give charity
those who opress the orphans
those who burn widows alive with their dead hubbies(sati)
those who shave widow women bald (christianity)
those who considered woman was a slave and 3rd class citizen
those who say that a woman cannot give witness
those wgo play with a woman's reputation
those who say that woman cannot be educated or give sermons
those who let their women and men commit fornication
those who do not desire what they deisre for them selves
those who are not kind
those who are not patient and enduring
those who are arrogant
and this applies to both muslims and people of other faith.
may the peace and blessings of Allah be with u

LOL to the first answer.
Here is a definition for you sweets...
An infidel (literally, "one without faith") is one who doubts or rejects central tenets of a religion, especially those regarding its deities. More generally, an infidel is one who doubts or rejects a particular doctrine, system, or principle.
In Islam, the Arabic word kafir (كافر) refers to non-Muslims, frequently with a derogatory sense [1], and is usually translated into English as "infidel" or "unbeliever". The Turkish equivalent of "kafir" is giaour.
In Judaism, heathens (pagan gentiles) are called acum (עכו"ם, an acronym of Ovdei Cohavim u-Mazzaloth עובדי כוכבים ומזלות literally "Star-and-Constellation Worshippers"). Heretical Jews may be called minim ("sectarians"). Unlike in Islamic use, the Hebrew "kofer" (כופר, cognate of the Arabic "kefir") is usually applied to apostate Jews. The other term, mainly for atheists is "epikoros" (אפיקורוס, literally, an "Epicurean").
In Roman Catholic Christianity, "infidel" referred to those who do not believe in the divinity of Jesus. It is an archaism now supplanted by "non-Christian".
