Because man has created too many religions most of which tell their followers that it solely is the only "true religion" Once ingrained with this some religions send forth missionaries or people to preach or "save" others by recruiting (converting) them to their "right religion" others sometimes rebel against these ideas or teachings.
Everyone who is religious believes they chose the right and correct religion (why else would they believe or have faith in it) thus when someone tries to tell them they are wrong of course in most cases it creates anger or hate towards the opposing religion.
Try to think of ones connection with his/her religion as that of a mother and her child... A person comes along and says the child is all wrong, stupid, shouldn't even exist. Exactly what kind of response do you think this person will get?

The ones that fight, maim, kill and cause war in the name of religion are NOT devotees of their said faiths.
They fight to show the true devotees, what a False and Fake devotee looks like so that the real deal don't make the same mistakes as the falsies are making.
-A Hateful Christian is not following Christ, how can they when Christ is about Love?
- A Chaos causing Muslim is not following the Quran, how can they when the Quran is about Peace?
- A Violent Buddhist is not a devotee of Buddha, how can they be when the Buddha is about Non-Violence.
-A Destructive Pagan is not a follower of Mother Goddess, how can they, when the Mother Goddess is about Preservation.

Disharmony, extremism & disrespect for other religions are the main reasons.
Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddism are some of the graet religions and none of these teaches extremism or disrespect for other religions, but the followers of these religions are getting more & more extremists.
May be we are going away from religion & forgetting the teachings.

Because everyone has different experiences and believes that their experience is correct and want more people to follow what they follow. Let's put it this way, if your experience with country music is pure happiness, wouldn't you share that with others? And wouldn't you be disappointed if I came along and said that country music bites and is only for waste of space drunks and cowboy wannabees (no disrespect to drunks or cowboys)? You would try to convince me that country music is the only way to feeling great and having a wonderful life. You'd try to prove it by showing how wonderful your life turned out. You might even point out that my own life is miserable and in need of country music to make things so much better. See where I'm going here? Everyone thinks their stuff is more special, or even that their lack of stuff is more special. Now if you did convince me that country music was the only music that could set me free, you'd be so happy, and we'd both turn up our tunes to share with everyone around us, even to the point of being annoying. It's because of our love for the music that we do it. Now you know why I'm a Christian. It's for the love of the Great Musician! <*)))><

Religion is the best and affordable commodity ever concocted by Satan to divide human. This is the only commodity that excel in all aspect of emotions, commotions and with a little or no emphasis at all on devotions. But more so on traditions, belief, rituals and mysticism as an added attractions.
Wikepedia define religon as a system of social coherence commonly understood as a group of beliefs or attitudes concerning an object, person, imaginary being, or system of thought considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine or highest truth, and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions, and rituals associated with such belief or system of thought. It is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system" but is more SOCIALLY defined than that of personal convictions.
Sociologists and anthropologists see religion as an abstract set of ideas, values, or experiences developed as part of a cultural matrix. Primitive religion was indistinguishable from the socio cultural acts where custom and ritual defined an emotional reality.
Other religious scholars have put forward a definition of religion that avoids the reductionism of the various sociological and psychological disciplines that relegate religion to its component factors. It may be defined as the presence of a belief in the sacred or the holy.
According to Bertrand Russell, that "religion in any shape or form is regarded as a pernicious and deliberate falsehood, spread and encouraged by rulers and clerics in their own interests, since it is easier to exercise control over the ignorant."
Religious knowledge, according to religious practitioners, may be gained from religious leaders, sacred texts (scriptures), and/or personal revelation. Some religions view such knowledge as unlimited in scope and suitable to answer any question; others see religious knowledge as playing a more restricted role, often as a complement to knowledge gained through physical observation. Some religious people maintain that religious knowledge obtained in this way is absolute and infallible (religious cosmology). The particulars of religious knowledge vary from religion to religion, from sect to sect, and often from individual to individual.
Religion and philosophy meet in several areas, notably in the study of metaphysics and cosmology. In particular, a distinct set of religious beliefs will often entail a specific metaphysics and cosmology. That is, a religion will generally have answers to metaphysical and cosmological questions about the nature of being, of the universe, humanity, and the divine.
God allow this things (diversityy in religion) to happen in our world today becasue of
1) Our insensitiveness to his word.
2) Failure of the Jews to adhere to the word of God in teaching the gentiles about the one true God.
3) Failure of the Majority of the Christians to preach the true gospel base on the teaching of the apostle.
As long as there is a religious fanatics, people will continue to fight in the light of Religious belief and traditions without a sound doctrinal wisdom to proved the facts.

Because religion seeks to answer the most important questions that humans can ask themselves. Where are we? Why are we? How are we? Who are we?
Obviously, if one of us thinks that we're stardust, another one thinks we're a divine spirit, and somebody else thinks we're reincarnated souls of insects, it creates quite a bit of controversy.
