This term is used indicate the advance of timing of ignition in Internal combustion engines. Theoretically, ignition is suppose to happen when piston is at the top dead center - TDC - but to make the cycle more efficient and to take delays(mechanical parts, flame propagation) into account ignition timing is advanced or ignition is done prior to TDC.... so that maximum power can be harnessed from the fuel cycle...
