Ish_ma-el, originally a Hebrew word which etymogically means 'God will hear' is the name of the first son of Abraham who was cast after the birth of Isaac, his second son. Ishmael was born from the maid servant Haggar who was an Egyptian slave girl that Abraham's wife Saraah had brought with her to look after. After six years of the birth of Ishmael, Isaac was born and Saraah was jealous of Haggar and directed Abraham to cast them away in a desert.

Abraham left the mother with the little son by the side of a spring in the desert. That spring is traditionally identified as a Meccan well near the Kaaba, which Muslims believe was built by Ishmael and Abraham.

Muslims recognise Arabs as Ishmael's descendants, thus distinguishing them from the Israelites, the descendants of Isaac. Ancestor of 12 tribes in North Arabia, Ishmael is also treated by the Muslims as a prophet; but Jews and Christians look down up on him as a son born from a servant and not wife. Hence, the question of legitimacy is at the root of all the troubles between the two other Semitic religions and the Arabian Islamic religion. All of them are from the same Semitic racial stock as per the Genesis, as well as Quran on which there is no dispute. Ishmaelites in the Bible is generally referred to caravan traders.

It appears that Muhammad who was well versed in The Holy Bible along with the Old Testament was reacting to this ill treatment by the Jews as well as the Christians. And after initial success in taking the leadership of the Jews and Christians in Yemen, he dreamt of globalising his stature at the instigation of his Mistress and wife Khadija.

He had selected the word Islam to coincide with their ancestral forefather Ishmael the son of Abraham who was subjected to inequality and discrimination. That is why even to-day Muslims with pride say that in the eyes of Allah all are same and it has great appeal in societies where there is social inequality on basis of caste, race, colour, etc. as in Africa and Asia due to racial complex by the Europeans.

Abraham and Sarah were unable to conceive a child, so Abraham decided to father a baby with their Egyptian woman servant Hagar. The baby that was born was named Ishmael, and some believe this is where Islam truly began. Later Sarah finally gives birth to a son named Isaac, and she becomes jealous that Hagar was the woman who gave birth to Abraham's first born. So Sarah decided to cast Hagar and her son Ishmael into the desert out of jealousy.

At that point the story splits depending on which religion you're referring to. The whole thing happens with Abraham sacrificing his son Isaac to God according to the Christian bible, but the Muslims believe that Ishmael was the one offered as a sacrifice to God in Mecca, where Abraham brought Ishmael when Sarah forced him to leave. And there in Mecca, Abraham and Ishmael rebuilt the Kaaba (which is a shrine) after the flood from Noah's time.

The rest goes on from there...

To start with it was Abraham that had Ishmael as a son. His other son was Isaac. Isaac is the Father of the Jewish People. Ishmael is the father of the Muslims. Isaac was the blessed son. Ishmael was not the blessed son. So one could draw up the conclusion that the Jews are blessed by God, and the Muslims are accursed. Is this fair, I don't know, but that is the truth.

Ishmael was the eldest son of Abraham (Gen.16). From him came the Arab nation. Nothing to do with Islam at all.

Correction Ismail (Peace be upon him) was the son of Ibrahim (Abraham) (Peace be upon him) not Adam (Peace be upon him).
Abraham had two wives Sarah & Hajar. Hajar (2nd wife) was the mother of Ismail (Peace be upon him) while Sarah (1st Wife) was the mother of Ishaq (Isaac) (Peace be upon him). Thus Ismail was the elder brother of Isaac. Abraham along with his wife Hajar & son Ismail shifted to Makkah to rebuild Kaaba.

Isaac (Peace be upon him) laid the foundation of Judaism while Ismail (Peace be upon him) was the forefather of Mohammad (Peace be upon him).
