Ishmael is the son of Abraham who was the 19th generation of Adam. The 9th generation after Adam was Noah whose younger blessed son was Semi. Ninth generation after Semi was Abraham who did not have any child till late stage of life. He at last had a son from Haggar who was an Egyptian maid servant and brought by Saarah, the wife of Abraham. Saarah became jealous of Haggar and gave birth to Isaac after six years and asked Abraham to cast the mother with the child in a desert.
Abraham deserted them near a spring believed to be near Kaaba in Mecca which is traditionally accepted by the Muslims as the first Mosque in the world. Ishmael means 'God will hear' in Hebrew and it is not improbable that Muhammad named his new faith in the name of their forefather. Ishmael is referred to as a Prophet by the Quran along with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and Jesus.
In the lineage of Abraham and Isaac, it was Jacob whose son's name was Juda. Juda's other name was Israel and hence, Israelites are referred to as descendents of Isaac and 12 tribes of North Arab are referred to as descendents from Ishmael. The whole together are called Semitic group.

Ishmael is generally considered to be the first of the Arabs. Islam is generally considered to have originated among Arabs, but has not been confined to them.
I guess that's a connection.
I would suspect that nearly 1500 years passed between the birth of Ishmael and that of Muhammed. That makes the connection a little less direct.

In Islam Ismail is the son of Abraham. GOD asked Abraham to sacrifice his son to test Abraham's obedience. Adam, Noah, Jonah, Suleiman, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed are Muslim prophets.
GOD sent Moses to guide his people and teach them about Allah,
but when he returned to them after his absence for 40 days he found his people worshipping a goldent cow. His people didn't follow GOD. So Judaism was changed badly. So GOD told Moses that a man will be sent ( Jesus Christ ) in the future to guide the people in the future, Moses told his people but they didn't believe in that. When Jesus Christ appeared Jews fought him, inspite of what Moses told them in the book ( but Jews changed what was in the book for their own wellfairs ).
So Jews fought Christ, and tortured him. And when the Romans decided to hang him on the big cross, GOD took Christ to sky and put another person who looks like christ on the cross (people didn't notice that because of GOD's power ), people at that time thought that Christ was the one hung on the cross.
In the original Holy Bible, Christ told his students that a man will come in the future to continue the message, but in Rome the christianity guidelines were changed. When Muhammad was sent as the messenger of Islam. The first human who told that he's the messenger of GOD was a christian person living in Mekkah. This is the truth of Islam. Islamic Guidelines and rules weren'r changed and are still original till now. But sorrowfully a lot of people in the world, especially who hate Islam are trying to fake the people in the Media, they try to make a message in the media telling that Islam is the religion of Terrorism, and that is false. Moses and Jesus Christ were Muslims ( They are not Terrorists ).
I am a protestant but I'll declare my being a muslim soon.
For all the people who want to find the truth about Islam, it's the most logical religion I've ever studied in my life.
Islam rescued me from a lot of sins.
Islam is not for Arabs. Any person who believes in Islamic rules and guidelines is a Muslim.
Don't be faked by media.

well most people think that islam is a new religion but no islam is there since Adam - pbuh was created. ISLAM means peace, submission and obedience to ONE GOD. if anyone follows that sincerely then they are muslims.
as for abraham and ishmael - pbut, were the ones who built the KABAH at MAKKAH. and both ishmael & isaaq -pbut are one of the 25 most important prophets of islam.
abraham-pbuh could not have a child through hazrat sarah-a.s, that is why God asked him to marry hazrat hajirah-a.s . and ishmael-pbuh was the first son and 2-3 yrs of his birth isaaq-pbuh was born.

yes ismail is the father of the Arab race so Im sure he was raised to be religious just like his brother, somewhere along the line things got twisted around, Christianity and Islam are surprising similar with a few dynamic differences that causes them to hate each other

If you mean Ishmael, the first-born son of Abraham, there is some connection.
The Bible records in Genesis 22 that God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. Muslims claim that it was Ishmael, not Isaac.
