'Islam' means 'The religion of entire submission' which was founded by Prophet Muhammad as a reaction to the rejection by the contemporary Jews and the Christians who did not accept him as a Prophet along with Jesus and others up to Abraham as mentioned in the Semitic literature.
Al-Baqarah chapter in Holy Quran bears the testimonial that it was intended against "the stubborn Jews who had degenerated and their violation of the covenant and their practice of cow-worship and their hardheartedness". In this chapter which was revealed at Medinah, the Prophet makes a reversion to the subject of fighting, which was necessary if the Muslims would escape national death, and illustrations are given from Israelite history. The whole Book of Quran is intended against the Jews and the Christians, where the Prophet says " Those upon whom wrath is brought down are the Jews and those who went astray are the Christians."
While fully agreeing with what Brother Michael has collected as authentic materials from an impartial source to which some of the Muslim adherents have taken objection. My earnest appeal will be to dispassionately study the historical materials; since, unlike others such as Juda and Jesus, Muhammad was a part and parcel of recent history on which sufficient materials are available for any one to see and come to a conclusion.
With regard to the other aspect, whether Muhammad himself was a zealot and fanatic by attitude and actvities, one can rely on the Hadith and the original biographies on the Prophet written by his Muslim followers as well as historians like Edward Gibbon who has mentioned about Muhammad in 'Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire'.
On MUhammad it is written that "........he was now commanded to propagate his religion by the sword, to destroy the monuments of idoltry and, without regarding the sanctity of the days or months to pursue the unbelieving nations of the earth...." " At Medina...seven hundred Jews were dragged in chains to the market place of the city; they descended alive into grave prepared for their execution and burial; and the apostle beheld with an inflexible eye the slaughter of his helpless enemies.x x x x x x x x Chaiber was the seat of Jewish power in Arabia. The chief of the tribe was tortured, in the presence of Muhammad, to force a confession of his hidden treasure. (page 240)
The total number expeditions were 82, two every three months during Muhammad's stay in Medina. "Twenty six are the 'Ghazwat' in which the Holy prophet himself participated and fifty six are the 'Sariya' .(Hadis notes 2283). The Prophet had ordered that 5% of each collected booty were his own share and the rest were to be distributed among the Mujahideens. Renowned historian Edward Gibbon comments, "....the apostle santified the license of embracing the female captives as their wives or concubines; and the enjoyment of wealth and beauty was a feeble type of the joys of paradise prepared for the valient martyres of the faith. "The sword" says Muhammad, is the key of heaven and of hell: a drop of blood shed in the cause of God, a night spent in arms, is of more avail than two months of fasting and prayer; whoever fails in battle, his sins or forgiven". (page 240 in Gibbon's Book ).
Muhammad believed and practised cruelty in its extremity. The present Al - Qaida followers are no match to him, if we have to believe the accounts given by his biographers Mirkhond, Ibn Ishaq and Tabari. Those who follow the Prophet must become new men with a new conscience and new loyalties. They must be hardened in the difficult school of Islam. They must become participants in its blood rites. The destruction and pillage of other people's temples and images set the tone for the Muslims of the future.

What is your source? You are siting hearsay.... There was never a man like the prophet Mohammed the source is Volumes upon Volumes of stories of his life. Everything from the way he treated women and children and how he treated his enemies and aggressors. How about if you have something to say, you reserach it first.
How dare you judge someone with out looking up somje hard sources first. Why don't you go to the Masjid and find out for yourself. Meet some True, practicing Muslims and see how beautiful Islam is, and how much you could learn from the final Prophet of God.
You never know, you may find out how to ask a question without sounding like an ignorant jerk.
Open your heart and ask God to show you the truth, when you open your heart your mind too will open.Don't be affraid of what you might find.
God is the Greatest. I bear witness the there is no god but God, and that Mohammed was his final messenger.
Peace

Every word of your statement is completely wrong and I am truly interested where you got this information.
I am muslim myself and none of this is true.
And my source?
Well the entire history of Islam,I assume.
There are no biographie"s" there's just the one we all know.
And of course his own words that we have recorded in "Hadith"
And I suggest you read a book about him that was written by someone who is actually muslim so he actually knows what he is talking about.
From my experiences people "collecting" information and making a book about something that they had not lived themselves for something they never had anything to do with, usually turns out pretty ugly.

This is such an intelligent way to find out. Make an accusation and then ask others to prove you wrong.
Go to http://video.google.com and the type:
Islam: Empire of Faith
This is a documentry made by PBS which features many non-Muslim scholars share their opinion about prophet's life.

We humans have historically suffered waves of religious madness. And, in those waves of religious madness, the mad bicker over whether their gods and prophets of ancient times were ordinary men who made ordinary mistakes or whether they were supernatural beings who were perfect. Faith constructed upon concepts of perfection isn't "faith". Faith constructed upon concepts of perfection is "fascism".
