Yes.
Green card is officially known as "Permanent Resident Card" or Form I-551. It's no longer green in color, as was the case in the past, hence the name. It was also known earlier as "Alien Registration Card", "Resident Alien Card" etc.
Green card holders are officially referred as lawful permanent resident (LPR).
Green card is a "privilege" and not a "right". You may loose your green card under certain circumstances. You must maintain your green card to continue to live and work in the US and eventually become a US citizen. You are expected to respect and be loyal to the US and obey the laws.
Whether you received family based, employment based, refugee based, asylum based or diversity visa lottery based green card, all permanent residents have the same status.
Maintaining Permanent Residence You may be found to have abandoned your permanent resident status if you:
* MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY INTENDING TO LIVE THERE PERMANENTLY.
* Remain outside of the US for more than one year without obtaining a re-entry permit or returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.
* Remain outside of the US for more than two years after issuance of a re-entry permit without obtaining a returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.
* Fail to file income tax returns while living outside of the US for any period.
* Declare yourself a "nonresident" on your tax returns.

I am not as well versed here on this subject.. however, I have been doing some major research for my boyfriend (Native North American moving to the USA from Canada), and if there is ONE THING I can honestly say, is that you are more 'likely' to be excused for a bit for going to Canada than any other country. We have more 'Immigration Rules' that accept Canadian Identification and information much more than any other listed country.
Before I would consider jeopardizing my status here, I would certainly check with an INS Officer, and hope for the best! I wish you all the best :)
