Detailed information is a subjective term, but they do provde a lot considering that they are bound to this little blue ball, stuck between a sliver of atmosphere and cold dark space.

Some of the information is fact based on observation and measurment. Some is theory which they seek to ptove or disprve by the scientific method.

Facts can be measured by telescope, which allow us, even you, to see the heavens and the light of the artifacts. Some of the light can be passed through inferometers to measure the chemical makeup of what they are looking at. It works on earth, so we believe that what we see is accurate too.

Some calculations are mathematical. Just as we can mathematically measure the height of a tall building by measuring from two locations. When the earth moves from one side of the sun to another, a start distance can be measured.

Edwin Hubble discovered that the light measured was shifting into the red band, which was amazing and unexpected,. It means that everything in space is moving away from everything else. They conclude that we are all part of a "rubble" in a massive explosion, everything bowing apart. When they plot the rubble pieces, it looks as if there was an explosion at some point. The big bang

BUT, the most interesting part is the data received from non-visible light. Radio waves and such. As that is measured, more conclusions can be deduced. Some stars are redio beacons, doe example.

They publish what they think, but most of what they think they really don't know.
