I think your question is a legitimate one and I am going to answer it with another question:
Why is it that so little importance is placed on the virginity of men in ALL societies?
Unfortunately for women, this has always been a men's world.

a practical reason is that premarital sex doesn't inherently lead to any of the problems that people generally worry about (pregnancy, disease, etc), rather these problems are caused by unprotected sex. It would seem to me that there can be no smart, careful sex without protection which includes a condom at all times.
Religion doesn't forbid things for the health and welfare of its followers. Religion forbids in all instances to control followers. This is not to say that some of the restrictions aren't useful (for example, no premarital sex might decrease unwanted pregnancies, decrease the instance of STD's) but the restrictions neither guarantee this result, nor are they the impetus for such restrictions.
Controlling the behavior of people is the primary reason for forbidding something -- there is no other reason that makes as much sense. The value judgements that followers place on virginity, illigitimacy of children etc are used as a coersive measure to maintain compliance.

Because something happens inside of you when you have sex. It was meant to happen within the bonds of marriage, because that's how it was originally made for. Two people become one in marriage and in sex, and was meant to bond two people together forever. It's more than just a social problem. It's a relational problem. Society starts breaking down when people start doing what they want, ignoring the basic law of morality. Things that were once thought of as bad become a normal part of every day life. It was once thought that a woman having a child out of wedlock was shocking. Now we have junior high girls wearing maternity tops in the hallways of their schools. I've heard it said that eventually, everything will be acceptable, even pedophiles living with those they are taking advantage of. The thing is, if all of these things aren't stopped, our whole society will fall. Look how far it's come in just the past 30 years. It's getting worse and will continue to get worse unless we stop accepting these things as natural and normal. If animals started mating with whatever they wanted to, what would that do to the animal kingdom? There's a reason why they only mate with their own kind, and that's because they were made that way. So, by keeping ourselves for our marriage beds, we are insuring that our society will continue growing strong. And by committing to one person, we insure that our families stay intact, and strong too. <*)))><

Well........i have no idea why religions forbid it,but in some ways, its a good idea.Lots of times, kids become sexually active at an age when they dont know much about anything and they get pregnant or even worse,STD's.I dont like the fact that the emphasis is placed mostly on females, though. Why should it be ok for the guy to have sex and not for the girl?Of course, there's always safe sex,but lots of times, after having sex,u end up hating yourself and regretting it.Maybe thats why some religions forbid it.

there are a lot of reasons why it is so important in some societies and you may not understand them. like you said, a girl could get pregnant without a husband. someone might argue that even if girls were educated about safe sex, the little devil inside of them would still be curious to find out what would happen even though they know what could happen. in some cultures, it is a sign of respect. a woman who saves herself for marriage is pure, someone who can make a commitment, and i'm pretty sure, whomever she ends up marrying would be happy.

this is an idea that the christian churches have put into the minds of people for so long (a few thousand years) that is has stuck. It goes along with the degrading of women, and grading into them and men that women are inferior in many ways. There are wonderful things that both men and women can do that they are better than each other at. There just needs to be a balance.

because a girl only has that first time once, and if a guy puts ladies on a petastal of respect he hates to think that his lady has been abused and not treated with respect. I heard someone say the greatest gift a lady can give her husband is her virginity. I know everybody says what about the guy, well he isnt as special as a lady.

Because it's the best way for old people and men to control the female population. Society makes it so virginity defines you, which is the most bs thing.

I DONT KNOW ABOUT RELIGIONS, I KNOW I WONT HAVE MY DAUGHTER HAVING SEX WITH ANYONE UNTIL SHE MARRIES, I'M NOT GOING TO GO TO SOME HOSPITAL AND SEE HER LAYING ON A BED WITH BLOOD AND PUSS COMING OUT OF HER MOUTH WHERE SHE'S ABOUT TO DIE WITH AIDS!!! And before any of you say "you can't control your teen daughter", let me assure you, she is 19 and she is still a virgin. My daughter dont even fart without my permission. She's a straight A student, and A plus health.
Aids is a real threat in this country, and ANYONE who is a virgin should stay that way until they get married and even then have the guy show a medical report which shows he is clear of HIV

it has become a moral and religious issue, to better control the little girls... i dont know.. but personally, i think it was said to lessen problems such as unwanted pregnancy and having have to go through the trauma of abortion and other sexual issues.
