2 stroke engine has ;

1 intake and compression
2 combustion and exhaust

4 stroke engine has ;

1 intake stroke
2 compression stroke
3combustion stroke
4 exhaust stroke

If you tried to make an 8 cylinder 2 stroke engine it would be next to impossible to balance out and get the motor to run smoothly, thus the 4 stroke is better adapted for larger engines because you always have all strokes happening with each crank movement.

with a 2 stroke, the piston goes up and down once in the cycle when the valves open (so they open every time the piston goes up and back down). .

with a 4-stroke, the piston goes up and down twice in the cycle where the valves both open . . so they only open every two times the piston goes up and down (full range of motion). .

the camshaft is what makes the valves open (there's an intake valve and an exhaust valve on each cylinder (the cylinder has the piston in it). .

This was my understanding when I was in high school (like 31 years ago). . and I'm pretty sure it's still the case . . if it isn't this it's something very close to this. .

Big Daddy explained it right.
Also, the 2 stroke engine uses a fuel/oil mixture for combustion and lubrication, while the 4 stroke uses straight fuel for combustion with a separate oil reservoir and pump for lubrication.

In case of two stroke engines, every two stroke of crankshaft or 1 revolution of crankshaft - will make up for one full cycle....

Where as..in case of four stroke engines, every four stroke of crankshaft or 2 revolution of crankshaft - will make up for one full cycle....

Hence 4 stroke engines are more energy efficient and less polluting...
