I speak English, but I also speak french. I want my child to be able to speak both fluently also. How common is this??? I don't know many people in my area who also speak french...

The easiest and seemingly most effective way to do it is speak French to the child, but keep speaking English to everyone else. I have seen this work personally! Your child's first words will be in French, and for a while it will be their primary language, but they'll eventually catch on, and be so far ahead of everyone in their school it's not even funny.

Good for you!

I have a friend who was born and raised in Nice, France but now lives in America and she has spoken French at home with her children from babyhood and they are ALL bi-lingual and all of her children have profited by being so.
Languages come totally easily to children - they speak English with absolutely No problem at school and at the same time French at home.
I also have had friends that went to Europe with their parents for a year when their parents, who were University professors, were on sabbatical AND those friends of mine (who were about 12 years old when they spent the year in Europe) came home speaking really good French And they did not attend American schools over in Europe but attended Lycees Francais instead. So Speak Totally French at home and every thing will be just fine.

Hello... I am french. But to understand well your question, we would need to know if you are french too? is it your native language?

My boyfriend is norwegian, and we both speak a lot english.
If and when we have a child, I hope we will give him or her the opportunity to discover each language: french, norwegian and english.
This is common in mixed couples, but not at all when the language is not the native language of the parents.
I mean, if you just learnt french when sutdying, I would find it original and not common at all that you want to use it with your child.
But after all it would not be so bad, discovering other cultures and ways to express is definitely widening minds.... :)

The earlier you start teaching them a second language the better. During the first 3 years of life the brain is stil forming the neuro pathways an they more they lern early the better off they will be later. I speak French, German, Spanish and Italian in my home. My kids think I am a bit nuts, but it is fun and they are learning.
