One of the main things a person should do when feeling any form of depression is to lighting up your surroundings..... Make sure you have plenty of light.. some bright colors.. and if you watch any movies or TV shows.. make sure they are comedy or lighthearted shows that are uplifting... call home and if you can get a web cam so you can feel closer to your family and have them get one tooo.. My daughter was away for a year and that really helped.. Good Luck.. :)

I know what you're going through! I lived in the same area for 22 years, two years ago I married my husband who's in the military. We got stationed in Germany, which I thought would be awesome! When we got here I found that we would only have one car, I would be stuck at home all day long and never leave post. Once you go off post here its all farmland as far as you can see, the nearest mall is 11/2 hours away. I'm also used to a big city, and I miss not having shopping and galleries to go to when I'm bored. Even the movie's would be nice, or to have more than 4 tv stations! With a 9 hour time difference and how exspensive it is to call home I don't get to talk to any family or friends very often. I never felt more depressed in my entire life. I just finished my bachelors and couldnt use it, there arent jobs available. I didn't know anyone.
It took two months before I gave up being upset and started trying to make things better. I started volunteering at a non-profit store twice a week and started meeting people. I started going to church here and getting involved in what they had going on. I started writing e-mails everyday back home. I made an effort to make friends and have plans for the weekend.
Things will get better once you change your mindset. You have alot more opportunity than I do here! You can call people when you miss them, and get involved in activities. Enjoy that you can start a new reputation for yourself! Things will get much better, you just have to sortof find your grove in everything. Adjusting to a new place can be hard.

Write a huge list of things that make you happy, then tick them off as you do them (not including friends & fam)
Start doing things that make you smile.
Dedicate one day a week to spoiling yourself.
Buy yourself some luxuries (nice shower gels, shoes, makeup)
Focus on things you do alone (arts, crafts, etc)
Get a pet to keep you company
Watch and read funny things, laughter will help
Get a webcam and mic to talk to loved ones
Join a local club/activity to meet people
Get a new haircut/color and new clothes
Volunteer-helping others will make you feel good
Take up a new hobby (photography, cooking, etc)
If the depression gets to be too much, I'd see a doctor about a low dose anti deppresant. Just to get you through the darkest time of your depression.

Hope these tips help:
- Take tyrosine (a component of amino). Take vitamin B & C to fuel your brain and combat stress.
- Get plenty of sun.
- Get plenty of exercise to weat it out and pump oxygen into your brain. If you jog, run as fast as you can until you are out of breath before you stop.
- Meditate by focusing your thoughts on your breathing. Meditate will strengthen your mind.
- Pray alot. Have faith in the religion of your choice. Believing that someone powerful is willing to help you, strengthen your belief you will recover. Going to church also helps you to make friends.
- Don't take anti-depression pills because the pills makes you sleepy but it does not help.
- Find some new friends to help you get over your feeling of being empty and loss without your family and friends.
- Find a lot of work to do. I did that when I was away from my country for a while. I forgot the longing for my friends and family when the work load was heavy.
Hope these helps.

For starters, get off the damn computer and go meet with REAL PEOPLE!! Being around positive people and any human interaction should help a lot. I used to spend all day on the computer and used to be soo depressed. I shut the thing down for a few weeks, got out and met people, started exercising, and feelings got WAY better. I get on the computer like every other day now and I like it much better this way.

Start a club; write a book; start some sort of an organization to get the people there involved.
It's the trade-off for the job you like, but quite frankly, I wouldn't move to a rural area for exactly that reason, even if I loved the job.

have your friends and family email you pics of them, pics of your old home town, you can call them or write to them once in awhile. if you get sent these pics weather by email or snail mail you can make a scrapbook and when you get homesick you can look back at these pics. where you live in alaska get to know the town or city you live in. become a member at a gym if u have one thats a good place to meet ppl. do they have coffee houses there? go there on the weekends buy a paper and have coffee outdoors, ask around or look in the paper for entertainment ideas in your area. if you are in an apt. building get to know your neighbors or in a house the neighbors around you. good luck at you new job and new surroundings
