Part of it is spell-check. The reliance on technology to improve one's grammar and spelling can be a problem. However, more and more kids are on the internet and texting to their friends on cell phones. They carry those abbreviations and codes into their classroom and homework. This practice will stop when more teachers decide to check spelling rather than let it slide.

There does seem to be a serious lack of spelling and grammar knowledge among Americans these days. In fact, you accidentally misspelled "grammer". I believe part of the problem is internet instant messaging and text messaging. People are learning how to make shortcuts in spelling and grammar and forgetting how to properly use the English language.

A whole lot of nothing. If they weren't so busy wondering what the "cool" kids thought of their clothes or whether they should go to a party with so-and-so, they might actually know how to spell and punctuate a sentence correctly. But then kids today think it is "so uncool" to be smart and know what you are doing.

They learn to use spellchecker for spelling, calculator for calculations and a computer for typing.
In my days, it was required to have good handwriting. Badly written homeworks were returned with a sour remark "rewrite cleanly and re-submit". Who can write nowdays?
My fear is that spelling, arythmetics and writing are no longer considered necessary.

Spend a day at your local high school. Or better yet, volunteer at an elementary school. You can find out firsthand. If you still think there's a big problem, perhaps running for office in your local school board is for you. But please, don't search for the answer here. It's like asking a criminal to define his own crime.

Some schools suck when they dont have the money to afford good teachers or school supplies. It really depends mainly where kids are raised like in the ghetto or in a rich suburb.
