Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that manifests itself usually in split personalities.

Speaking in tongues is nothing more than baby-talk used to fool people they are speaking in some unknown language. In short - a farce. What Christians do when speaking in "tongues" is nothing like the biblical account found in the book of Acts.

I think Schizophrenia happens when a person is not accepted as he is, and therefore he is forcibly made to hide his likings, which affect the mind such that it tends to appear whenever it gets a chance to express itself.
I Think Every human being lives in a similiar situation, not only those severly affected.
I think The people around the person cause Schizophrenia in him, because they do not let the person express and unburden himself or herself.

I don't know aboue speaking tongues. But I know about a therapy called "No mind". In which people are allowed to talk gibberish, something meaningless, incoherent continuously for an hour, and then they sit silently for another hour. It helps to release tensions in a persons mind.

Speaking in Tongues:
You have a room and there are 10 people in this room from 10 different countries of the world.
A teacher comes into the room and speaks to the 10 people.
Each person hears the teacher in his language from the town he was raised in, and marvels that the others in the room can understand the teacher!

Well there are different types of schizophrenia. And it is a disease of the brain - it has bio, psycho, social causes and all different factors - even some things durintg childbirth can put someone at risk for developing it like lack of oxygen, etc. It really means a splitting of one's mind. Ok this is long so I hope you wanted to know all of this (haha) readddd onnnn...

They can often suffer delusions, hallucinations, disorgnaized thinking, and cognitive impairment but no symptom is across the whole population - each person is different as far as how their symptoms are expressed. Schizophrenia was first called dementia praecox, which described how it is a chronic, deteriorating psychotic disorder with rapid cognitive disintegration. Also - schizophrenia normally develops in the early adult years. Symptoms vary- just like with bipolar, some are more manic, some are more depressed and there are different degrees - not always the same. Schizophrenics can have disorganized thinking, some are incoherent, some hallucinate, some have a very flat affect to their voice, talk in "word salad" where all different thought are connected and it doesn't make sense - which is defined as " a string of words that vaguely resemble language, and may or may not be grammatically correct, but is utterly meaningless. So this kind of resembles speaking in tongues as you mentioned but it is never called that - I study psychology in school and that is never mentioned as a symptom - they use word salad instead. They are a bit different. It is more due to the disorganized thinking though - that their heads are so loaded and overwhelmed with all these things and sometimes hallucinations that it confuses them and they can't get out what they want to say. They suffer from thought disorders - they will often rhyme things or leave words out, switch topics every 2 seconds, talk fast and endlessly about things that don't make sense but that are not incoherent syllables like speaking in tongues is. They make jokes that are not funny - their minds - the chemicals is their brains deteriorate and it just gets worse and worse and worse. They say things that never happened - sometimes can not tell reality from fantasy or a hallucination - in fact it is a very very scary thing to think about having to suffer and live with in life like that - not knowing if you really hear what you hear or see what you see - it is so sad.

Some don't speak at all, they can try to voice what is not real - and some don't show any verbal signs at all. There are positive and negative symptoms - postive ones are things that healthy people don't do - like hallucinate etc and negative are things that we normally do - like speak with different tones, make expressions etc - so negative is the lack of those things. The type that people think of (paranoid) is not the only type - these are the types:

Catatonic schizophrenia - In this case, the person is extremely withdrawn, negative and isolated, and has marked psychomotor disturbances.

Disorganized schizophrenia - In this case the person is verbally incoherent and may have moods and emotions that are not appropriate to the situation. Hallucinations are not usually present.

Paranoid schizophrenia - These persons are very suspicious of others and often have grand schemes of persecution at the root of their behavior. Halluciations and delusions are prominent.

Residual schizophrenia - In this case the person is not currently suffering from delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech and behavior, but lacks motivation and interest in day-to-day living.

Schizoaffective disorder - These people have symptoms of schizophrenia as well as mood disorder such as major depression, bipolar mania, or mixed mania.

Interesting fact is that most schizophrenics share physical traits like long faces, long foreheads, very large features like noses and abnormally long fingers - even though science knows so much - it is still a very incidious, mystery of a disease. I find it very interesting but so sad.

Now as far as speaking in tongues - that really means speaking in different languages - it can mean speaking in totally useless incoherent syllables too which is called Glossolalia. But - only some schizophrenics do this - like listed above - there are all different types of the disease - so not all do it. So I guess you could say that the type that does speak in incoherent syllables speaks in tongues but many if not most - do not.

Apparently the brain function is more like Tourettes than Schizophrenia - read this:
Ethnographic observations of religious glossolalics and Tourette Syndrome victims found motor and vocal behavior similarities between them, even though the two sets of behavior are assigned opposite values by those experiencing them. Glossolalia is thought to be good, an expression of God, while Tourette Syndrome is considered evil and of the devil. This paper explains in neurological terms the disjunction in values assigned to similar behavior. Temporary hemisphere disjunction is offered as an explanation for belief in a supernatural cause for these behaviors. Labelling them as good and evil results from differential stimulation of the pain or pleasure system. The neurophysiolgocial relation of movement to affect further biases the oppositional labelling of their experience

Good question~

~~Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality and by significant social or occupational dysfunction. A person experiencing untreated schizophrenia is typically characterized as demonstrating disorganized thinking, and as experiencing delusions or auditory hallucinations. Although the disorder is primarily thought to affect cognition, it can also contribute to chronic problems with behavior and emotion. Due to the many possible combinations of symptoms, there is ongoing and heated debate about whether the diagnosis necessarily or adequately describes a disorder, or alternatively whether it might represent a number of disorders. For this reason, Eugen Bleuler deliberately called the disease "the schizophrenias" plural, when he coined the present name.

Diagnosis is based on the self-reported experiences of the patient, in combination with secondary signs observed by a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist or other competent clinician. There is no objective biological test for schizophrenia, though studies suggest that genetics, neurobiology and social environment are important contributing factors. Current research into the development of the disorder often focuses on the role of neurobiology, although a reliable and identifiable organic cause has not been found. In the absence of objective laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis, some question the legitimacy of schizophrenia's status as a disease. Furthermore, some question the status of schizophrenia as a disease on the basis that they do not consider their condition to be an impairment.

The term schizophrenia translates roughly as "shattered mind," and comes from the Greek σχίζω (schizo, "to split" or "to divide") and φρήν (phrēn, "mind"). Despite its etymology, schizophrenia is not synonymous with dissociative identity disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder or "split personality"; in popular culture the two are often confused. Although schizophrenia often leads to social or occupational dysfunction, there is little association of the illness with a predisposition toward aggressive behavior.

Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia are highly likely to be diagnosed with other disorders. The lifetime prevalence of substance abuse is typically around 40%. Comorbidity is also high with clinical depression, anxiety disorders, social problems, and a generally decreased life expectancy is also present. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia typically live 10-12 years less than their healthy counterparts, owing to increased physical health problems and a high suicide rate.

speaking in tongues is when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and speaks through you in a Heavenly prayer
language. In the Scriptures, "tongues" always mean languages that really exist(ed). The Greek word "glossa" is also used in the phrase "tongues, as of fire" (Acts 2:2), to indicate the tongue as a member of the human body. It is further used in Revelation 5:9: "every tribe, tongue, and people ..." to represent the different populations on the earth, with their different languages. Speaking in tongues is, therefore, a sign for the unbelievers (1 Cor. 14: 19-25) so they could understand what was being said (v.23). [The gift of healing is similar. We find in the New Testament that it is used only for the benefit of unbelievers (especially among the Jews, who looked for signs) to reach their conscience, to confirm the Word that was preached, and to establish the new testimony. We do not read about any healing of believers; in fact, to the contrary (see 1 Cor. 11:30; 1 Tim. 5:23; 2 Tim. 4:20; Gal. 4:13-14; 2 Cor. 12:7).] Speaking in tongues is also presented in the New Testament as a fulfillment of Joel 2 and Isaiah 28 (1 Cor. 14:21) and, therefore, is intimately linked with Israel or the Jews. In Acts 2 and 19, and also in Corinth, the Jews are addressed by different tongues. Thus, they heard the Word of their God spoken to them with "pagan" tongues, something very exceptional. After the introduction of believing Gentiles into the Church, and after the formal closing of the Jewish dispensation (illustrated at the end of Acts 28 and implemented in the year 70 AD with the destruction of the temple), there are no more sign-gifts, at least not on behalf of God. [The enemy will fool people through an energy of error, allowed by God, in the coming days of apostasy (2 Thess. 2:8-12); however, a similar spirit of error is already at work, referred to as the mystery of iniquity.] God will give them again in the near future, connected with Israel: by the two witnesses in Jerusalem (Rev. 11) and, at the beginning of the coming millennial reign (Isa. 32; 53; Ps. 103), connected with a special healing of Israel.~~~

(does that answer your question?)

*speaking in tongues is not a behavior disorder as some have put it here... read the Scriptures to see what exactly speaking in tongues is all about.

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality and by significant social or occupational dysfunction. A person experiencing untreated schizophrenia is typically characterized as demonstrating disorganized thinking, and as experiencing delusions or auditory hallucinations.

Glossolalia comprises the utterance of syntactically meaningless syllables. Glossolalia is claimed by some to be an unknown mystical language; others claim that glossolalia is the speaking of an unlearned foreign language. Glossolalic utterances sometimes occur as part of religious worship (religious glossolalia).

speaking in tongues is when a person is overcome by the holy spirit and prays to God in a language that only he and select others can interpret.
schizophrenia is when a person asks the same question over and over and over in different categories, in less than a few minutes.

schizophrenia is a psychological disorder (for lack of better teminology at the moment)

there are lots of different kinds, and one particular kind can be characterized by speaking incoherently or using "word salad," or speaking only in sequences of words that rhyme...speaking in tongues.

the difference is (if you wanna call it this:) speaking in tongues can be a symptom of schizophrenia...they're not the same

(other symptoms can include lack of emotion, or movement...hearing voices, feeling like people know your thoughts...etc)
