Signs are that often male dogs can sense that a shift in hormones is occuring in the female as early as a full month ahead of time. Lots of sniffing and excitement. Young males with less self control will begin mounting even if she is not ready and even if she wards them off.

If there is going to be a normal course of bleeding discharge, dabbing a white tissue on her vulva and examining it for any sign of pink and doing this once or twice a day can help pinpoint when *you* detect that her cycle is starting. In reality sometimes they are further ahead than a tissue can detect (progesterone testing is more accurate but costs from 50 to 100 USD per test)

My point however, is that if males are showing interest, then something is going on. If there is interest in her, don't wait for blood spots. Begin working out where you will keep her until dogs lose their interest in her. Female canines do get pregnant without appearing to have come into heat. It's called "silent heat".

Don't take her for walks up and down the street since that leaves a trail of advertising and scent to your home and can attract some powerful dogs that will rip down fencing (I've heard of and observed amazing things in large dog rescue including male dogs scaling 8 foot walls).

A young female and some older female dogs can actually be in their fertile period without going through an obvious bleeding stage. Some females do not get enlargement but do have a very scant amount of bleeding that is almost undetectable.

Another possible reason for the sniffing and excitement from other dogs can be an infection of the bladder or reproductive system. I know about a young male that this problem and the other males in the group behaved as if he were in heat.

When bitches go into heat their vulva swells and blood will be visible if you swab it with a paper towel. A ***** can not get pregnant unless she is in heat. It's impossible. 7 months is about right, it can be anywhere from 6-24 months before a ***** has her first season. Never breed on the first heat and always skip your bitches when you breed them. Ideally you should spay your girl so she won't have to deal with all of the problems associated with an intact individual. Not only will she be healthier but she will b happier and have a longer life as well.

Edit: lol Shela she said BEFORE the season! A dog can't conceive unless she's in season because the eggs will not be dropped.

Shela, Male dogs can scent your female alot of times before you can see any visible sign. Her first signs are normally slight swelling of her vulva and she may act more nervous or moody than normal.
She is probably going to come in heat within 2 weeks.
And no she will not conceive before her heat, but some females heat signs are so slight or light that you may not realize she is in heat before it is to late. So watch her carefully!

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

Yes it is possible. The best advice is, if you do not plan to breed your dog, get her spayed a.s.a.p.
Common signs are:restlessness, whining, sometimes there is a mucousy/bloody discharge not unlike human women have. trust me...getting her spayed is way better than not.
