I suggest that since you are receiving social security from him try contacting the social security office to see if you can get his SSN, They usually have a veterans representitive and they might be able to help you.
If you are able to get the SSN....and I hope you do.
Contact a Veterans Service Officer, you can usually find one at a local Veterans Organization, you said your dad was in Viet Nam, try the Viet Nam Veterans Association.
Also, check with your local County Clerk, they may have a copy of his discharge papers (DD-214) on file.
If you are having a difficult time trying to locate a local Veterans Service Officer, you can locate on on the VA's web site, their link is http://www.va.gov/

As already stated IF you are getting his social security then you KNOW his number...call the DAV(Disabled American Veterans). The VA has had so much money cut from their budget($400 million plus this year alone) they can barely take care of the vets currently in their care so it is no surprise that they cannot give you any info..check with all the ogganizations already mentioned..YOU have to do it or hire a lawyer none of us has the legal right to do this for you.

As the above answer states, check the obits and police records where he died. The obit normally lists the survivors, which will include parents, and maybe the place of birth. Since you are receiving SS benifits from him, check with the Social Security office. Since he was a vet, check with the VA. Check with the local clubs (VFW, Elks, American Legion), he may have been a member. Check with the SSDI (Social Security Death Index), they may have more information as well.

Good luck
