Valerie, just remember, you're in good company. Jesus tells us:

"If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you do not belong to the world and I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. Remember the word that I spoke to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours." (John 15:18-20)

Keep the faith, sister, and fight the good fight, finish the race. (II Timothy 4:7)

I think it's your avatar. (Just kidding) Sorry about the atheists. There are extremists on both sides of the equation. Try talking logic to a fundamentalist. It's like beating your head against a wall. You have my sympathies, because I know how you feel. For what it's worth, I would answer your question like this:

"Beliefs" are tools to get you through life. You hold them, but they hold you too. I understand your need for comfort, life (and the prospect of death) can be scary. Whatever you need to believe in to give you a measure of comfort is fine by me. But it should be a private matter. Someone posted a great parable which you may or may not consider on point, and maybe you've heard it, but it goes like this:

An Inuit (Eskimo) is being taught religion by a missionary. The Inuit asks the missionary, "Father, do people that have never been told of the word of God and don't know what "sin" is, do they go to hell?" The missionary priest answers, "No, if they do not know about sin, they will not go to hell." The Inuit sincerely looks at the priest and asks, "Then why did you tell me?"

Because you are preaching . That's not what this site is for. If you want to debate then say so. But do not question other's beliefs or non-beliefs, and then get defensive if you and your beliefs get challenged. I looked at your " Valerie's Q&A page and you describe yourself as a blonde haired blue eyed, tennis playing CHRISTIAN scuba diver. You just had to get that CHRISTIAN thing in there. Being Christian has nothing to do with anything you described of yourself. By coincidence, I am a blond, blue eyed, tennis playing Non-believing snorkler. (Never tried scuba diving). Does that make us even?

Maybe they're only "saying something about their (lack of) belief" as you say. Why would you assume that whatever you say is just "saying what you believe in" and whatever atheists say is "being at your throat". I won't deny there are intolerant atheists, but it seems to me that some Christians (not saying it's your case) will ALWAYS consider anything an unbeliever says to be disrespectful.

I think your feelings might be hurt by some of the answers you're getting.

Anybody can say anything unless it's REALLY abusive. Now go on out there and have a good time! Preach about Christ, ask questions about Christ, go out and give the atheists as good as they gave you. 'Specially that JT feller!

The atheists are rabid in their conviction there is no God and they quote scripture continually to prove it. Why can they not quietly have their beliefs and allow others to believe and worship as they want. They are continually treading on Christian's toes by suit to remove crosses and ban Christmas and they are making progress in the courts.

You sound a little sensitive, perhaps it's the issues you raise. If you think Atheists are at your throat, imagine what it's like for decent humanity to have to tolerate religion and religious people.

Religion is really just evil in disguise. Religion is responsible for the majority of wars, conflict and murder of innocent life since humanity began. There is considerable evidence to classify religion as evil, and talk of religion (Gods etc) should be banned. Because the records prove over and over again throughout humanity that religion is clearly responsible for crimes against humanity, taking part in any religious activity should also be outlawed and made a criminal offence.

The world would be a much happier and peaceful place if religion ceased to exist. Although there are some decent religious believers and preachers, they are unwittingly spreading evil around our world, and that they should simply keep their beliefs and thoughts to themselves in the best interests of humanity, or suffer the consequences for their actions.

People should consider that the world would be like Heaven if religion ceased to exist, but all the believers and preachers have turned the planet into Hell.

Here's another example of how religions hurt humanity. Christianity and Islam like to kill their fellow human beings.

I know there are many nice people who believe in God, but the real evil amongst us, are the vast majority of religious followers and believers who have clearly shown over time to be the major instigators of wars, violence, abuse, greed and practically everything evil on our planet.

Even according to Genesis in the Bible, God is clearly the greatest mass murderer in history. The Bible is full of terrible atrocities and evil, far more than nice things, but of course believers will just ignore or twist the atrocities into whatever soothes their confused minds.

Everyone knows of murders and violence associated with Christianity and Islam, I suppose all of the other major religions have a track record of killing their fellow human beings as well.

Seems to me that the behaviour of Atheists is quite mild compared to the behaviour of religious people.

These people need help finding the Lord. They jump at you because they are defensive and afraid. It is our job as Christians to try to help these people out. It is frustrating being the only christian sometimes. You don't have to be all "holy roly" that's what most atheists think Christians are. Maybe they're afraid we're a cult lol. Gently try to help them find their way to the Lord. Good luck.

So to do a Christianity check here.. when you wrote this did you say "What would Jesus do?"
Would he berate and belittle other religions or lack of?....
Or would he see them all as God's children?
Irony is your question contains the hate that it asks about.
Learn to love not hate.

its great to love god but that's your beliefs. don't preach to others about the greatness of your religion. show them by your works. for some god has been pushed on them so they dislike god. i live in Utah were the l.d.s religion rules all things. they say their the only true church. that in its self is faults prophesy . god will judge you on what you do. not your religion so don't push it on to others.
