According to the calendar, autumn runs from September 21 through December 21. The autumnal weather you're looking for, however, is in October and early November.

If you're looking for leaves changing colors, I would say peak season in the midwest part of the US is in October. In LA, however, you won't get very much. There are a few trees that will do it for you, surely. I took a group of kids from the desert to San Diego one year - they had never seen leaves change colors and fall to the ground (There were some on the SDSU campus) and they even brought some back with them!

The leaves that turn red and/or gold, sometimes start in late October. Mid-late November is a safe bet for a visit. At the same time you will see Floss silk trees in all their flowered splendor (plate sized, white-splashed with lots of pink, hibiscus like flowers), careful, the trunks have thorns.

I live in LA and if you want to see autumn then go to LA in mid november but we really don't have an autumn in LA just a couple of fallen leaves.

september through november, generally speaking.
You won't see much "autumnal weather" in L.A., though.
