a while back I took my Puggle to the Humane Society to get spayed and microchipped. When I picked her up they had put a real tattoo near her... y'know... and when I called them to ask why they said they do that so if someone steals my dog and takes it in to be spayed they will see it and know it's been done. I was like, "but I got her microchipped." No one ever asked for permission to tat my dog, it was nowhere on the form! I'm still mad. I love tats and all but... my DOG!?! Anyone heard of this or have anything to say on the subject?

It's some kind of little design, not numbers.

i work with the SPCA. this makes it easier for us to know if a dog has been fixed instead of footing the bill for x-rays on female dogs.
ALTHOUGH! on a owner spay we NEVER tat without permission..so unless you signed something without reading it..they SHOULD have asked.
Puggle?...just call it what it is. a mutt. and i LOVE mutts. but because of this new "designer dog" fad...ppl are stealing dogs left and right! this is another reason for the tats. if a dog is stolen...and say, three months later you see someone walking down the street with a dog that looks JUST like you missing pet. the tat would prove it.
Micro-chips are great. but they can be changed...by identifying the company of the chip, and "re-assigning" the chip to the "new" owners address. if the dog is stolen the new owners would have no idea that the dog was stolen or had a previous address on the chip.
a tat on the other hand...is permanent. no argument there. and will make your pet "undesirable" to steal!
i have just had a dog of mine tatted...she is a chihuahua/doxie MUTT...adopted her from the pound BEFORE this mutt fad caught on..now I'm scared she will get stolen for looking like the "so called hybrid breed" chihound or whatever..chiweenie..many other names.
FYI...a "hybrid" is an animal that is born from two separate but similar species. dogs...are dogs! not hybrids. a wolf and a dog...are two similar but different species, a half wolf half dog is a hybrid. hybrids are usually STERILE. so the idea of them actively breeding "pure hybrids" is ludicrous. anything to make a buck!

Dogs are tattooed with special letters and numbers for identification purposes. If a tattooed dog is found, the tattoo should be called in to Tattoo-A-Pet (or another registry) which will alert the owner that you have her/his lost dog. Tattooing dogs, usually on the inner thigh or ear, was more popular before micro-chipping came along. Some people have their dogs tattooed AND micro-chipped...and have collar ID tags as well. Yes, these tattoo machines are perfectly legal and are widely used by owners of very valuable dogs.

No, I have never heard of that... tattoos are not supposed to be on an animal by any means, and more than likely caused your dog A LOT of pain that can't by any means be legal. I personally would open up some type of court case because 1.) the needle could have penetrated into the dogs skin too much causing problems like ink poisiong or infection. 2.) It was never written in the forms about a tattoo. 3.) How did this humane society tattoo the dog? with a needle or other substance? Who did it and how were they trained to tattoo anything? Also, why wouldn't they have told you ahead of time? And why couldn't they use a dog tag instead of a tattoo and keep your dog on file that it was spayed?

For those of you who have never heard of this... Tattoos are now often used as a secondary and more permanent identification in addition to microchips. Tattoos have been used on dogs for *many* years as a means of positive identification. It is done by a professional under *local anesthetic*. It is usually a number, but can also be a symbol or other means of identification, chosen by the owner.
To the original poster... It should *never* have been done without your permission! You should have at the very least been notified that this would happen. You may have a case, as long as you had full legal possession of the dog when this occurred.
Either way, as long as she wasn't harmed during this procedure, try to think of it as one more ounce of security in an ever-growing age of dog-theft... Microchips can be removed, but tattoos (at least on dogs) are *very* expensive to cover...
All the best to you and your rescue!

Its quite common for animals to be tattooed. We have a cat from the SPCA and a dog from some fancy breeder and both of them have tattoos. It was wrong of them to put on on without your permission, but its no real harm and it was done with the intention of helping you and your dog.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/p7n73
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Ya, I think I saw an episode one time on Miami Ink where a guy brought in his German Shepard and wanted his name tattooed on the dogs penis.

Designer dogs are being stolen, having thier chips removed and being resold. SICK but true. It isn't right that they did it without permission, but at least there is a silver lining. Double protection.

I'd be mad also. I get my dogs micro chipped also, so no need for the tat. Call the president of the Humane Society and ask why the heck they did that!! I guess my big question would be, did they really micro chip her and how will you know?
