People do not like the thought of a higher power in control of their life. They want control, and any thing that challenges that, they disbelieve, ignore and even hate.I think it's just fear and insecurity that motivates it all. They blame him for all the bad things, but never give credit for the good he does.Bad things have to happen in order for some good to show through. That's my opinion anyway

In most people's mind, God represents some supernatural entity existing outside of everything that creates and makes things work.

This so called God is suppose to answer prayers and make everything well. When people observe and encounter difficulties, this rescuer doesn't seem to respond. Furthermore, there are seemingly many injustices that defy the teachings of many religions.

This erroneous perception of God (God actually is in everything and everything is in God) and the limited comprehension of Karma (cause and effect, sometimes over many a life time) causes many to be un-believers.

There are lots of reasons why intelligent people don't believe in God, but the main reason many religious people do is because religious belief is a function of mental illness. If you took the time to read the Bible, you would understand why it can't be accepted by many people, as follows .....

The Bible is Trash.

The Bible is the biggest load of garbage and codswallop ever written by man, and I’m sure it will go down in history as the greatest load of gobbledygook ever to inflict such traumatic mental and physical damage on humanity, but still today, some people sadly believe the Bible to be true. That’s very sad indeed. Very sad.

When people quote various passages from the Bible, for example ...

Mathew 5:29-30 God encouraged self-mutilation.
Isaiah 13:15-18 God allowed women raped and little children slaughtered.
Genesis 6:11-17 and 7:11-24 God is the greatest mass murder in history.

What happens? Religious people pop up from under every stone with the same old garbage. “That was the old Bible, or we’ve changed the meaning, or we’ve changed the context, or the quotes are out of context or or or, excuse after excuse.”

The fact is, they are Bible quotes, and the Bible is full of evil atrocities which religious people continually cover up, yet seem happy to drum into the minds of gullible little children. This is such a shameful disgrace in a civilised world.

If religious people are unable to apply commonsense and logic to develop a simple moral code to live by, then perhaps they could strip out of the Bible the evil, murders, rapes, abuse, and all traumatic references. Granted there will not be a lot left to read, but at least religious people may end up with a decent moral code to follow based on good, and not scare the living daylights out of innocent little children.

You mean "so few people"! Considering that God is just a theory, an idea that no one has ever been able to prove right, it's really amazing that Christianity has even survived this long! So, my question is why do so many people believe in God.

The main reason so many people do NOT believe in God is that there are so many ideas of WHAT or WHO God is that no one can accept them all. In your search for answers pertaining to this question, you have probably found a number of people who claim to know WHAT or WHO God is. You have probably gotten an equal number of varying answers. My brief examination of the responses already given for your question would indicate that most people are atheists. That is not strictly true. The fact is, Atheism is a religion, just like Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. This corresponds to the evolution of meaning, from its construction to its reification, from its reification to its alienation, and from its alienation to its deification. Atheists have deified the meaning of the term "God" as "something that does not exist." Just the same, everyone who has a definition of "God" will insist something is true of God. Everyone, that is, except those lovely people the Agnostics. Agnostics are people who will believe in God when they have sufficient proof. Their position would be said to be one of alienation, and they are comfortable with not necessarily being right, as long as they are not wrong. Hope this helps.

It comes down to what they feel they see evidence of. Of what they can prove. There are professional football players that have been playing footbal for years and years, working out, staying in shape, eating right and when they make a touchdown they thank God. From a logical standpoint, doesn't the person who spent years and years working out, eating right, practicving and staying in shape deserve some credit?
Also, if you hold up everything good that happens as an example of God in our lives most explanations of why there is bad fall kind of flat. If bad things happen in the worl because of free will, then don't good things happen in the world because of free will?

It isn't logical to a lot of people. You grow up hearing about Santa (and receiving gift from him for years!) - only to find out that he is not real. Neither is the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, or the boogie man. But God - this time we mean it, he really is real (and this book proves it - unlike all the other books about these other fictional characters that we have read and memorized as a child). It just isn't logical - and there is enough scientific information to create a second hypothosis that is plausible and provable, to the satisfaction of many.

Then you have other people who can believe in a Universal Energy (a cosmic something that clearly makes things go), but to think it is a "person" up in the sky, running the lives of each and every one of us - that is not plausible to me (and it feels like being a doll in somone else's game - creepy). But I would term my Universal Energy as God, in a sense - does that mean that I do or don't believe?

Peace!

because christians keep on going on and on about their loving and all-powerful god, yet if you look around you know that god is either all-powerful and not loving, beccause he allows evil to happen, or he is loving, but not all powerful because he can't stop evil from happening. and free will is just a stupid excuse, because god threatens us with hell if we do not follow his commands. so we in effect have no choice if we have to choose between those two. and people are so sceptical because those who profess a belief in god are often among the most hypocritical, mean-spirited people. and when someone says the know what god wants, that just reeks of self-aggrandisement and hypocrisy, because if god did exist, why would any human know what he wants? and of course, one could also ask, why so many people do believe in god

i dont believe there is a god..as in..i dont believe there is a person named god who created the whole earth and universe and man and etc..i believe there is energy.the universe started with The Big Bang, which is in fact energy, and everything developed from it.science and religion are searching for the same thing..a 'god'.the point from where everything started.only, religion keeps alot of secrets and misteries and tells you, if you have faith you don't need to question.the thing is, you'd be..stupid these days not to question and find out about what you really believe in,instead of gulping down everything the church says.it's not a question of faith,it's a question of personal understanding,if you like.i do believe that jesus lived, but i believe that he was a normal person who tried to change the present..like mother teresa for example.i dont believe that he came back to life after death.there isn't any proof of it.and by the way...for those who say that the bible is fact..the bible was written abt 1000 years after christ died.there's much much more to say...but i wouldn't like to bore you ;)
one last thing..there are no religions...all the ones we know of -muslin,catholic etc..- they all have the same foundations..they're practically all the same..
;)

See, here's the difference between evolution and a religion: There's scientific evidence for evolution. Well, that, and the fact that it doesn't tell me who I'm supposed to hate, blow-up, discriminate against, or just generally be a dick to. I guess that's why I don't believe in religion: I really don't need a 2000 year old book telling me who it's okay to be a dick to. Frankly, I'd much prefer the company of gays to fundamentalist christians.

It just doesn't make any sense to them.

Some people feel they should be good people because it is right, not because someone else threatens them with an eternity in a lake of fire if they don't. They feel the need to do it for themselves, not any form of God.

I don't need to look to a supreme being when everything I need to know is inside.

Everything you have to do to get into Heaven, you can do without once thinking of God. All you have to do is do what is right.
