This is a hard thing, for an intellectual person to open their minds and hearts to the mystery that is God. The thing is, if your friend is honest with himself, there is very little that we understand or believe purely with the intellect. Human beings are rational beings, it is true, but actually the way we learn is by experience. So as rational as we may be, we are actually more pragmatic than rational.
Our intellect serves us by taking our experience and extending it to similar, analogous situations that we have not experienced directly, but that we can classify with things we have experienced.
So where does this leave reason? As a librarian, putting similar books on a shelf. But it is not the reason that causes us to feel a connection with what is in the book, or to understand its content. It is something beyond the reason and beyond the intellect. It is something that is implanted in human nature that makes us communal beings, able to communicate and empathize with each other - to share experience. How do we explain this rationally?
I'm not sure if I am helping, but it would be an interesting discussion to have. Just remember, though, that it is not up to us to "convince" anyone to believe in God. God will do that, if the person is ready to believe - either through us, or through some other means. Remember, if God wants to, He can "raise up children to Abraham from the very stones".
In Christ...

Faith and reason do NOT go together, In fact, faith is the negation of reason -- if you believe in something absent evidence, or in the face of contrary evidence, that is faith, not reason. It follows that faith is the ultimate evil: the only thing that distinguishes H sapiens is the ability to use reason, and if you give that up, you have intentionally turned yourself into an animal. And what could be worse than that?

That's a toughie, I side with pool and drinks guy on this one. Faith and reason are tough to distinguish if you look deep enough. You've got to have reasons to have faith, and you need faith to distinguish reason from fallacy. They aren't the same, but they do definitely have a relationship.

To have blind faith you must disconnect all reason. The intelligent man is correct, faith and reason can not coexist in the area of religion. Faith in any god, in any religion is best served without question, without logic, and without reason. Faith dissolves once reason and common sense are applied to it.

heres a good thought to munch on .... faith and belief are two different things imo. one is physical and the other is spiritual ...spiritual things are revealed and known to us and are more real than what our senses tell us...also you cant teach or convey spiritual things by logical reasoning. People that are around you can sense the spiritual things but they cant put a finger on it .. so just let that spirit of truth rule your life and let that light shine from you.... that is doing the work of God. ...belief on the other hand is somthing you try to do ... its a physical conscious effort and logic comes into play with belief. they are two seperate things ...*ahem ...believe it or not :)

They don't!
That's why they call it a leap of faith!
A reasonable man would not step off a Cliff expecting to reach the other side before he falls!

If you are going to try using the bible, perhaps you should just go drink beer & shoot pool, or go bowling.
It'll be a lot more productive and entertaining.
